Parents' Weekend Meet & Greet, Friday afternoon, The Park

Sep 30, 2016 00:31

The weather in the park was cool, crisp and pleasant. Not too hot and not too cold. If Goldilocks was attending the school she would have called it "just right." The traditional decorated tent had all been set up, complete with various tables, an expansive buffet which included a grill and barbecued items, and the all important shadowy corners ( Read more... )

Go on! Mix it up! Chat with other parents. Wonder at the weirdness that is Fandom!

Brianna was a veritable beacon of white - white hair, white outfit, white everything but her extremely pale skin - standing by the edge of the picnic, her arms crossed.

Mingling, maybe not so much. More watching, and judging everyone by their stance.

She wasn't the only one, either. Jalian's white hair matched her white leather pants and white tank and her near-chalky skin, setting off her silver eyes.

So really, she was curious about this other woman and cocked her head, appraising her, before approaching. "You're here to see someone?"

That meant hi.

"Atton Rand," said Brianna, with all the sense of someone who also hadn't specifically been raised in social graces other than ritualized battle. "I believe your administration insists he's a professor."

Brianna didn't roll her eyes ever, but she sounded distinctly dubious.

Jalian took a moment to place the name, then nodded. "He seems practical, especially for a male. His class had some things that might be useful."

"It surprises me to hear that," Brianna said. She didn't make it sound dry as much as very gruffly conceding the point. "And who are you? You look almost Echani, outside of your facial features."

She certainly had something similar to a fighter's stance.

"Ah, you're from the same timeline as Kanan Jarrus," Jalian said. "He also mentioned that. I am Jalian d'Arsennette y ken Selvren. I'm from this planet, but a different timeline. A student here, at the moment. Are you this Echani, then?"

"I have never heard of anyone named Kanan Jarrus."

Kanan wouldn't be born for another few thousand years. Not that Brianna knew. Or cared.

"But yes and no. My father was Echani," she said, and was mildly surprised that saying so did not bring with it a certain twinge of hurt. (She, after all, did also not possess all the facial features of the Echani.) "As were all of my sisters." Beat. "But I have also never heard of this planet, prior to meeting Atton."

It was a big universe, anyway.

Jalian shrugged. "I think many people have not before they came here. This time has had no experience of other worlds yet."

"I have been told they are primitive," Brianna supplied. "I have met one other Earthling before. Sparkle? Atton's small friend."

"I know him," Jalian answered, grinning. "He's very easy to embarrass. And he has no defense training."

"And very jumpy," Brianna said mildly. "But you are not like him. You have received training?"

"I am a Huntress," Jalian answered with a shrug. "Ken Selvren girls learn before they walk. And you?"

"I am a Jedi, and Echani," Brianna said. She tilted her head. "My people believe combat is essential to knowing one's self and one another."

Jalian thought about that, then just shrugged again. "Ken Selvren only believe combat is essential to survival of the self and the tribe. Though you must know your own body well to fight effectively." She thought Brianna probably meant more than that.

"Combat is like communication to us," Brianna explained. "Even your stance now tells me about you. If you attempted to strike me, it would tell me more. If I watched you move while threatened, it would tell me even more."
