"What in the ever loving fuck is this?" Ronan had nearly shouted when he'd woken up and realized what was happening. Yes, he'd been warned about this and yes, he'd almost expected his run of good luck to end but like this? That wasn't even fair ( Read more... )

Brian was muttering swear words to himself as he stalked toward his car with his tools, hoping it would make him feel better about this whole--situation. He was halfway across the lot when his phone started ringing, and he pulled it out of his pocket only to find the call was from Agent Nelson.

If it had been one of his contacts from the Baltimore racing scene he was still trying to crack, he could have pretended to be 'Brian's girl,' but he'd never hear the end of it from the FBI if he went that route.

Brian considered his options for about three rings, then walked to the edge of the causeway and hurled his phone into the ocean. Gee, so sad that he lost it, he'd have to get a new one whenever he wasn't a girl any more.

That was when he noticed the kid.

Ronan didn't recognize whoever this was but he figured that it could be anyone this weekend. Girl he hadn't met before, guy who was a girl who he'd never met before or guy who was a girl who he did know.

But, he'd looked over and caught the phone throwing and snickered. And then scowled at how different that sounded. His voice wasn't his.

"I think I might end up doing that this weekend too," he remarked, trying to ignore his voice now.

"It's easier," Brian muttered, glaring at the spot where his phone had disappeared. "Do I know you?" he asked before stalking over to the Lancer and popping its hood.

Maybe having smaller hands would prove useful or something.

"I don't know." That was the honest truth. "I don't recognize you but I don't think that freaking matters this weekend."

Ugh.

Brian thought he recognized that horrible attitude. "...Lynch?"

Ronan stopped what he was doing and squinted. "Good guess. How'd you figure that out?"

Brian grinned at him, wide enough to show dimples. "If you can't figure it out, I'm not going to tell you." He considered it a teaching moment.

Ronan scowled and tried to think of anyone who might know him and would look like this if he were a girl. He tilted his head.

Didn't scowl for once. It felt strange on this face too.

"Wait. Teaching moment?" It took him a second, okay? "You're my teacher. Driver's ed. Right?"

If he wasn't right, he'd be shocked.

"Was it the hair or the car that gave me away?" Brian teased, because, seriously.

"Both," Ronan answered dryly. "Something actually wrong with your car or you just out here to...do something?"

Because he'd needed to do something. Something wasn't sitting in his room and thinking on his current situation.

"It could use a tuneup," Brian said. Which meant he was just out here to do something. Cars made him feel better, okay? "I'm going to do some upgrades but the parts haven't come in yet. And even if they had I doubt they'd let me pick them up like this."

"Why not?" Ronan asked, unsure why a gender change might stop someone from spending money. "Your parts shop have some weird rule where girls can't pick up car parts?"

Sounded backwards.

"Can't pick up a special order without ID," Brian explained. "I don't think they're gonna buy that I'm Brian O'Conner." Or Brian Earl Spilner, for that matter.

"Right." Okay, that made more sense. "What kinds of things did you have on order?"

Talking about cars was normal. It was interesting and this guy knew what he was talking about. Distraction achieved. Maybe.
