Prom - Community Center, Friday Evening

Apr 10, 2015 09:02

Hopefully, Fandom's student body knew better by now than to expect to come into a room decorated normally for Prom, with streamers and flowers and maybe a balloon drop or something for the end of the evening. There were streamers, of course, just as there was the usual surplus of glitter, though most of it had gone up on the walls tonight in cave ( Read more... )

What would a dance be without a food table full to the brim with delicious (mostly paleo) snacks and desserts and, of course, the punch.

Probably not spiked yet. That might change as the night progresses, naturally. It's tradition.

Edward wound up here eventually, of course. It was where the food was! And the drinks!

He'd contemplated bringing in the fancy rum he'd gotten from Isabelle to spike it, but he'd relented. Largely because it was expensive rum, and he didn't want to be handing it out just like that.

Instead he was stacking up an impressive amount of food.

After wandering around and getting a feel for everything, Travis ended up near the the food and drink section. He picked up a cup and sipped on it idly while he checked things out.

"Hey stranger," Kathy said, on one of her trips to the table. She'd realized she hadn't seen Travis since that whole Gaunt ordeal and immediately felt guilty for not checking up on him sooner. "How've you been?"

"Oh, I've been around," he sighed, smiling over at her. "Not bad, I guess. Just around and hanging out. You?"

"Pretty much the same," Kathy admitted. "Kinda had to force myself outta my room for a few days. That guy in town did a number on me."

Still did, sometimes, but she mostly managed to keep that confined to nights when she couldn't sleep.

"Missed my SATs, so I've been using the extra time to study." Shocking no one.

"How much of a number?" Travis asked, sounding concerned. "You okay?"

Kathy gave him a small, tired smile. "I'm okay," she said. "I'm pretty sure I ruined a friendship, I still have to confess to a professor that I stole from him, and I'm second-guessing myself a lot more--" which she hadn't needed, let's be real, "--but I'm getting back to myself. How about you?" she asked. "I'm pretty sure your name was on the list of people that guy had gotten to."

"Oh, I was fine," he said, understating it a bit but he was compartmentalizing well. "Gained something I'd wanted for a long time but figured losing it was worth it. I'll get over it, get used to it. That kind of thing."

Kathy nodded, getting something else to nibble on while she thought of how to respond. "I'm sorry that he used something you wanted against you," she said finally. Hers, at least, had practically been a whim, in its own way. "If you ever wanted to talk about it--probably not at prom, but, you know, another time--you're always welcome in my room, you know?"

"Thanks," he said, smiling at the kind offer. "I might take you up on it. I'm not great with talking about stuff like that but I still might stop by. I can be fun to talk to in other ways that aren't depressing."

"I've always thought you were fun to talk to," Kathy said, nudging him gently with her shoulder. "So you don't have to worry about that, okay? You're welcome anytime."

"You're too nice," he said, smiling at that. "I appreciate that. Might take you up on it one of these days. If I don't end up buried in glitter, never to be found after tonight."

"No such thing," Kathy said, giving him a soft smile. "And I hear there's a memorial for the people we've lost over the years to the glitter. Maybe you'll be lucky and you'll wander out into the night, confused and disoriented from the glitter in your brain, and we'll find you looking like a disco ball on the boardwalk."

"If you say that loud enough, this island's going to hear you and make that happen," he said, snickering. "I don't need that to happen to me."

"Yeah, but have you ever thought about what it is that I need?" Kathy teased. "Maybe I need to see that because I'm pretty sure it would be hilarious."
