The island had settled down and Nathan had been glad of that. He'd missed being out in the preserve, missed laying on his back and staring up at the stars through the thicket of branches and leaves. By the end, the preserve had been whittled to something sickly and cold.
But, things seemed to be good now. Nathan found himself resting back against a log as the sun dipped below the horizon. With evening arriving, it meant the noises of the night. Animals coming out to hunt, wind rustling leaves and crickets singing their song.
Nathan took a slow drink of water, savoring the warmth that still clung to him. From the corner of his eye, he caught sight of one of the oddly colored deer. Something inside of him shifted, spiked and he found himself breathing hotly and sharply. His body thrummed with excitement, with a need to run and Nathan almost panicked before realization set in.
Something was happening. Months after his Giving, something was finally happening but he didn't know what. Didn't know how. When he looked up again, the deer was gone but the adrenaline racing through him remained. He felt stronger and quicker.
More alive.
It was heady.
[Open if someone's out in the area. Just setting up for some new canon (FINALLY)]
