And yep, the power of positive thought. He was screwed, here. ...Was Karina a hugger? Was anybody else Sparks knew a hugger?

"Well, neither am I!" she snapped. "And given that I've been on shower duty and pet duty and food duty the very least you could do is be on hug duty."

She scowled at him.

"I've also been on crazy people duty at the store," Karina said loftily. "You're just an underachiever."

That would... sure show him, Karina.

"And... no, I don't know anyone fluffy for him to hug," she added. "I think he's friends with Minako? But I don't know how close. Same with Kathy. He used to be really close to the mousey librarian girl, but she's gone now."

Surely he could sneak into the dor--no, wait. This was the guy who'd thrown pizza at Sparkle's window rather than try to sneak in.

Ugh. It was almost going to have to be her, wasn't it?

Atton could sneak into the dorms, actually. Perfectly well, and he'd probably never get caught. He'd just rather not run the risk. Especially if there was a non-creepy option. (Plus this had the positive side-effect of making Karina believe he couldn't sneak into the dorms.)

"I'll give you ten," he retorted. "You can come get me if it doesn't work."

Maybe if they both hugged him, they'd make up one functionally huggy human being?

"Look, kid, if you manage to snap Sparkle out of this before he withers and dies, you can have three pizzas all to yourself for all I care," Atton said.

He'd been keeping it together fine for a while now, but the worry was starting to pour back out.

Yes, this was her way of coping with being worried. Sassing a teacher was helping her be fine with this.

It was a terrible argument.

"Yeah, well, maybe he's a kid," she said grumpily. "But I spend more time with adults than kids, so I resent being called one."

Entirely true. Heroing meant most of her coworkers were twice her age and Pao-Lin and Ivan, while around her age, were in the same boat.

"Besides," Karina said. "I'm sparing you from hugging duty. I should at least get kudos for that."

"Me calling you 'kid' isn't exempting you from kudos," Atton pointed out. "You can have all the kudos you like, too, but I'm still going to call you kid. Kid."
