Someone had left a Rubik's Cube on the counter in the lobby.
Éponine, being her innately curious self, had picked it up as soon as she spotted it and had been fiddling with it ever since . . . with very little success. Every time she had one face almost solved, there was no way she could get the last piece aligned with the others without messing everything else up.
How that thing hadn't gone crashing through the front window of the post office and into the street yet was anyone's guess, but there was a good chance it could happen before the end of the day.
