A dark and seedy coffee house, Sunday

Jul 13, 2014 15:58

The place might've once had a name -- might even still have one -- but as far as Eliot was concerned, it didn't need one. It had enough shadows to sink into after a job and the blackest coffee in town, and that was just fine for him ( Read more... )

All roads lead to a spot as dark as the coffee it served. Dinah still had other loose ends to tie up-- she only had until sun-up.

But this, first.

She paused in the door, then headed over to Spencer's table, and sat down.

The gun in her hand was concealed by the table.

"Spencer."

Eliot took a sip of his coffee. "I think I liked it better when you called me 'Handsome'."

"Handsome. Dangerous. Deadly." A beat. "Eliot Spencer."

Dinah kept her hand steady and her voice low.

"I think I liked it better when I didn't know the truth."

"Yeah, and which truth was that? The one where the world is full of killers and thugs, or the one where you're trying to become one of them?"

Dinah's chin jerked back at that upper-cut of truth, and she took a deep breath. "Answers first. Then..."

There were cello strings playing somewhere. Funny. There wasn't even a jukebox in this joint.

"Who hired you to kill the Black Canary?"

Prepare that chin, then, toots.

Eliot leaned back in his chair and crossed his arms over his chest casually, not in the least concerned about the gun she had aimed at him under the table. "No one."

"What?" A close shot: that gun-hand under the table was wavering.

Dinah lowered her voice to a whisper, leaning in even closer. "I know you did it. You were the only Fandom hitter in town that weekend. Don't try to lie."

"Didn't say I didn't kill her," Eliot said. "She was collateral damage."

"She wasn't the target?" Dinah leaned back, stunned. That was a very surprise left hook of a surprise reveal there, Spencer. "The Black Canary died by accident?"

"I didn't miss," Eliot said. "Just couldn't leave any witnesses. New Gotham ain't like Fandom. Got all them super-types running around, cramping a guy's style." He leaned forward now, resting his elbows on the table. And Molly, muzzle aimed at Dinah, Eliot's finger on her trigger. "Now I'll give you a chance here, toots, 'cause I kinda got to like you. Why don't you go home and grieve your sister like the smart cookie you are, instead of stirring up extra trouble."

"It's a shame we didn't meet before you killed her." Dinah's voice was shaking now, along with the gun.

Which she placed on the table, clicking on the safety.

"I might've really gotten to like you, when I was still alive."

Congratulations, kid, that actually got an eyebrow raise out of him. "Ghost of a canary," he said. "That's actually a new one on me."

"I had 'til sundown tonight to catch the guy who killed me. But you're right. I don't want to be a killer." She sighed, then stole his coffee. "You never did buy me that drink."

"By all means," Eliot said, tucking Molly back into his holster. "Suppose it's the least I can do, seeing as I killed you, and all."
