The Magic Box, Saturday Night

Jul 12, 2014 16:39

Showtime. Rita couldn't keep the nervous shiver from her spine, every time that curtain went up. The band was warming up, and the tables were starting to fill.

She held her cigarette holder out (in one elegant gloved hand) for the nearest gentleman to light. Her dress was perfect, and so was her hair. She herself didn't take the stage until last ( Read more... )

Take a seat. Buy a drink. Have a conversation in the low lights. Watch for other interesting guys and dames strolling by.

Rita was seated close enough to the stage that she could watch each girl and possibly boy no modding and see how they were handling the crowd.

That wouldn't stop her from tapping her toes or refilling her glass of champagne.

(It was her club. She could have a glass or two of champagne before she went on.)

If anyone came into the club looking for trouble, they would definitely find it here, and if they wanted to to start something, it would be ended pretty quickly. The suit standing in the shadows by the door would see to that. This club belonged to Angelface, and it was under his protection. Anyone who came in looking for a fight would be politely asked to leave, and if they were lucky they wouldn't need to make the clinic their first stop afterwards.

Leon watched the patrons gruffly, glaring at random people.

After letting Venom have some fun in the monster speakeasy, Flash made his way out to the Magic Box for a fun human night... Well, as fun as he could afford on a washed up boxer's salary.

Luck just didn't come tougher than it did for guys like Flash. The name said it all, he was a Him in the pan, and now all he could afford was a bottle of Royal Crown. Not even the good stuff. Not even Coca-Cola. Tough breaks, just like the ones that made his nose point a little to the side.

I was following the lead for the Killer of the Black Canary to the Magic Box. It was magic, all right. The kind of magic voodoo that you do so well. People die of voodoo too.

But I was here looking for two singers, sisters, who might have last seen the Black Canary, and then mysteriously blew town. Why? I intended to ask them.

Dinah ordered a bourbon, neat, and sat down at the bar, sipping while she observed the crowd.

Momoko made her way through the room, trying her best to look lost and frightened. She finally made it to the bar and drew a deep and shaky breath before taking a seat on a stool.

Dinah slid her a sideways glance, then signaled the bartender. "You look like you could use a drink, sweetheart. What's eating you?"

EH? Hmm. Momoko eyed the person next to her. Didn't look like a flatfoot... Private dick? One way to find out!

"No, I just... I can't..." And Momoko feinted a faint, making sure she fell towards the woman next to her.

"Easy, sister!" Dinah caught her easily, and helped her flop back onto the bar. "I take it back, maybe you've had enough. Barkeep! Call her a cab."

"She's a cab."

"You're a clown," Dinah told him.

Definitely not a copper. They'd have called for an ambulance!

She reached up and set the back of her palm to her forehead. "I'm... I'm all right. Please, just some water?" Brandy.

"Scotch, neat," Dinah told the bartender.

Did I believe this sob sister, or not? For every dame with a broken heart and a sad story, there was another one looking to sell you down the river. Blame my soft heart that I was ready to listen anyway.

Momoko gave a token refusal, though really? Scotch? For a lady? Obviously this was a dick.

Hmm. Maybe Momoko could make this work for her; her feet were totally killing her!

"I sorry. I don't mean to be a burden. I... I'm just at my limit." She let a little hysteria into her voice. "I've been all over town and I don't have much time left!"

"Time for what?" Dinah asked, her voice a little sharper as she took the glass from the bartender, and held it out to Momoko. "Let me help."

Call me a sap. And I will sap you.

Doesn't make it any less true, I guess.

"I have to return home. My fiance..." She took the glass and clutched it tightly, thinking fast how best to turn this woman to her side. "He thinks I'm visiting a sick friend."

She took a gulp of the scotch and then winced. That was not from the bottle on the top shelf, that's for sure. "But I have to find him! My brother; I can't leave without finding him!"

"Your brother's missing, and you think he's on the Island," Dinah summarized, looking mildly skeptical.

No one who was *really* that worried took that long to get to the point. They started with "help me help me, I need to find him!"

But I was curious. As well as a sap.

"Why didn't you ask your fiance for help?"

"My fiance doesn't even know I have a brother. Boz has been missing for years." She dropped her head and let a tear fall into her drink. "If it wasn't for father..." Momoko sucked in a breath and shook her head.
