As was her wont, Rosalind came carefully down the stairs expecting to find the worst since the shop so often lived down to her expectations

It was strange, really, that he hadn't visited the bookshop until now. Perhaps Ichabod had unconsciously feared that he would spend far too much money if he let himself roam free among the bookshelves.
Today, however, he had noticed the sign in the window, so he entered, glancing around the interior before offering a small nod in greeting to the lady behind the counter.

"Hello," Rosalind said politely, having looked up at the sound of the bell. (She liked the bell since it made it harder for people to sneak into the store.) She gave him a rather cool, but professional, smile.
"Is there anything I can help you with, or will you prefer to browse on your own?"
Re: Talk to Rosalindnot_called_ickyJune 16 2014, 16:47:53 UTC
"How do you do, madam," Ichabod replied. "I couldn't help noticing the sign in the window." He made a gesture towards said window. "And I would like to enquire about the position."
Re: Talk to Rosalindgive_areasonJune 16 2014, 18:28:41 UTC
Yeah, that wasn't even remotely the same thing at all.
Because he was a prospective minion employee, Rosalind resisted the urge, barely, to raise an eyebrow at him.
"Liking books is a good place to start," she said, since it was the blandest, but most appropriate thing she could think to say to that. "May I ask why you're interested in applying?"
She strongly suspected it had something to do with needing money. Or the books held just that much appeal to him...

"Since arriving on the island I have found the costs to be higher than I had expected," he said truthfully. "And I am looking for a position involving something that actually existed in 1771, as I would hate to be completely useless."
Re: Talk to Rosalindgive_areasonJune 17 2014, 12:31:00 UTC
She certainly wasn't going to complain about honesty--so long as no one expected it from her.
"Fair enough." Not having enough money was something Rosalind understood. "Most of what you'd do here is help people locate what they're looking for," which was more of a job than it sounded like, given how often the shop misbehaved, "make recommendations about their reading material if they request it, and work the cash register. Other than that, I ask that all employees keep the shop as neat as they can and that they don't put their lives at risk to come to work--or to remain at work, if there is a risk to their life." This time, she did raise an eyebrow. "Does that sound reasonable to you?"
[Sorry for not getting this sooner! RL intervened!]
Re: Talk to Rosalindnot_called_ickyJune 17 2014, 18:02:57 UTC
"Perfectly reasonable," Ichabod replied, unsure whether the part of not putting one's life at risk was a joke or whether it was part of the strange things that happened here.
Re: Talk to Rosalindgive_areasonJune 17 2014, 18:10:18 UTC
It wasn't even remotely a joke, sadly.
"Then if you want the job, you're hired." Rosalind's interview process was based on many factors, but mostly personal whim. Besides, she found it hard to turn away someone who needed the money. Not that she'd admit to that. "Was there a particular day you were hoping to work? The weekends and Thursdays are currently open, but if your schedule would work better with taking Mondays, I can move my shift. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday are taken."

"You've picked the right day to come in," Rosalind said, easily switching gears. "I'm Rosalind, owner of Book Haven. It's a pleasure to meet you."
And if he became her employee that wouldn't even be a lie! Rosalind enjoyed having employees.
"What's your name?"

That didn't involve selling books, Ichabod, just reading them.

Honesty was a virtue, after all.

He had never applied for a job before, so he did not know what to expect from an interview.

And she doubted he'd be the last.
"Did you want to start this coming Thursday, or the Thursday after that?"

This would be yet another thing not to mention to his father in his letters home.
[and that is tomorrow, thanks to SP :) So I can post tomorrow if that is ok?]
