Mooby Land, Saturday

Dec 07, 2013 17:25

Saturday was no relaxing day off for the Hyperion Corporation. Far from it. A few of the workers trudging along through town into the wooded area were even wearing some heavy-duty construction attire, their mechanical exo-skeleton the same bright, unalarming yellow as the t-shirts of the people in Mooby Land and Taste of Thai ( Read more... )

"Subtle" was apparently not in these guys' vocabulary.

Mike stood in front of the counter with his hands in his pocket and a blank expression on his face. Mostly he just wanted a burger, but after the announcement on the radio he was curious.

What, they were completely subtle! Just look at all the yellow. The universal color of subtlety.

The guy behind the counter was giving Mike about the same kind of blank expression right back. After a brief moment of that, he managed a, "Yes?"

Dear Hyperion: If you're going to run an illicit business out of the back of a restaurant, put actual restaurant staff in the front of the restaurant. Signed, someone who's fucking done this before.

Mike glanced up at the menu and sighed. "A number one, medium, with a Coke. Please."

"There's no Coke," the man said.

Really, Mike was lucky that by now he knew what Coke was. They didn't have that back home.

Mike sighed. "If all you've got is wine, I'm gonna be really disappointed," he grumbled. "Who's in charge of the plumbing around here, anyway?"

But there wasn't anything he could do about it, and he didn't want to make a scene. He rolled his eyes and shrugged. "Whatever, then. A burger, fries, and something to wash it down with, that's all I ask."

Kitty was in kind of a mood. There was the whole wine from the taps thing which luckily she found out before she went to shower, so it was just going to have to be a ponytail day. Plus after that additional broadcast when she was (technically) in charge of the radio station, she's put today in the category of "ugh". So, she figured, why not go down to where the new people were supposed to be working just to see what was going on.

"You one of the new guys?" she said, even though she totally knew he was.

The guy behind the counter kept looking surly.

"Yes." Right, he should probably add to that somehow, especially since her way of initiating conversation seemed to imply she was about to ask questions. "What would you like to order here at --" Glance up at the sign overhead. "-- Hyperion Mooby Land?"

"Number one," the guy barked over his shoulder to the poor other guy tasked with actually making the food. Then he shrugged. "I'm in charge here. Any questions you have, you can direct at me."

"Okay, so what was with the radio this morning?" she asked.

"Handsome Jack's official greeting on behalf of the Hyperion Corporation."

That was a very automatic-sounding response. Kind of like he wanted to sigh at the end of it.

Coming from Marvel, Kitty's first thought was that "Handsome Jack" sounded like the name of a fourth string supervillain who got beat a lot, but she didn't say that.

"So taking over a business means he also gets to use my radio station?"

"Borrow it. It was in the fine print in the contracts." Probably. "If you have a problem with it, you're free to take it up with legal."

Hyperion's idea of laying low in unfamiliar territory - while largely shoddy otherwise - included rules that prohibited him from just shooting her on the spot to be done with it. You were welcome, Kitty.

"And how do I do that?" Because she was totally in the mood to yell at lawyers. "Considering I had zero notice and no one else should really have the right to make business deals or sign contracts on behalf of something I'm in charge of..."

The guy did not look like he sympathized or cared much.

"You can leave your contact information with us. They'll get back to you."

Possibly with threats!
