Well, like it or not, Jessica was committed at this point. So after the first round gong sounded, she got back up to cheer.

"Admit it, that wasn't so bad!
Maybe this round will keep you glad!"

And then she heard her name right away so she stopped there.

It was entirely possible that Sparkle had joined the cheer squad just to have an excuse to yell shit like this at large groups of people. He gave a grin and laughed as he darted off to his next date.

Hey, it was someone Jessica knew a little from classes. And a little bit more from that one day she was going to tag the warehouses. But Jessica was in costume that time, so it was time to pretend that she really only knew Bay from class.

"I just want to warn you up front that I don't normally go on dates in a cheerleading uniform. That would be weird and kind of embarrassing." Kind of like it was for her right now.

"Yeah, I figured this wasn't Squee," Bay told her, with a slight smile. "If it was I think we'd have to burst into song and you do not want that to happen. Who decided dating needed a cheering section?"

"Loki did. And then I agreed. Because apparently I can be dumb," Jessica said, letting her eyes roll for a second. "But you know what, I'll still take this over the singing angle. I'm not sure I could make it through a full three minutes if it involved serenading someone in a bar."

"You look cute?" Bay said, trying to be reassuring. "You know, other than how you seem totally not into it. But cute. And a serenade would be way too much pressure on a speed date."

Wait, did Bay just call her 'cute' twice? She was just talking about the outfit, right? Cue a little bit of blushing.

"Oh, no, it's not that I'm not into it. It's just that I wasn't, you know, expecting to do it," Jessica said quickly. "I didn't sign myself up. Otherwise I probably would have worn something, you know, with pants? And I'm not usually a 'dating person,' whatever that means. I'm not even sure." Stop talking for a second, Jess.

Wait, was Jessica blushing because Bay had called her cute? Now Bay was going to blush in return.

"Pants are helpful on a date," she said sagely. "And I kind of am a 'dating person.' But my last boyfriend was kind of an epic thing, so right now I'm trying to enjoy being single."

A pause. "Somehow, enjoying being single by coming to speed dating made sense to me."

"Well, it's kind of painlessly dating and then breaking up with people five times, right?" Jessica said. "If anything, you're reaffirming your singleness by moving on time after time after time. And then at the end of the night, you get to point out that you just dated around freely. That's the power of being single."

"See? It makes total sense."

"Yeah, my comfort zone is probably back in my room with a book," Jessica said. Or out on the rooftops in a costume. Whichever. "But hey, this is less than a half hour of my time, and I end up actually talking to nice people," she gestured to indicate that yes, Bay was included in that, "or things go horribly and I have a story to tell. Now that I've eased into it, there are probably worse ways to spend the night."

Bay didn't get called nice all that often, so she smiled at the gesture.

"Definitely," she agreed, as the buzzer sounded. "And hey, maybe we can hang out later."
