"Fancy seeing you here," Cade drawled when he saw her. "Thought you'd be at home with a science book."

"So, you have less than three minutes to charm me. You better get to it, and you're not off to a great start."

"Remind me to thank your friend into having you come," Cade said with a smile. "I thought this might end up karking boring. You've saved me from that."

"Huh. That's actually a better start than I expected," Jessica said. "But you are right. With my smart mouth and familiarity with awkward social situations, I was pretty much born to help people through things like this."

Well, she was born to be sold to the military as a super soldier, but this was basically the same thing.

"I don't normally do this sort of thing--I'm pretty good at finding my own entertainment--but I'd be spending Saturday night in the bar anyway," Cade said. "This is kind of fun."

"What kind of entertainment do you normally find in a bar on a Saturday night?" Jessica asked. "As you know, I am a bookish lady and know nothing of these debauched places."

"Well, at home, it's not entirely unheard of for one of the fine patrons to try to break my face with a bottle," Cade said, "but here's a little tamer. Want to join me some time?"

Jessica may have had a moment of concern when she considered whether or not she was being asked out on a date or if it was just, you know, time at a bar. With people. Goin' drinkin' with the guys. So she decided to rely on smartassery.

"That depends. Can I hit you with a bottle if things don't go well? I could try to smash your face if it would help you feel more at home."

Cade laughed. "Gives me incentive to make sure things go all right. Sure. You can hit me."

And then she hurried off to her next date because okay, that sounded like it was going to be an actual date what the hell.

That "time's-up" noise was seriously annoying. It was like the bizarre black ... creature ... guy hosting was trying to be obnoxious on purpose.

Okay, she was pretty sure he was.

But she found her next seat, bringing the daquiri with her, and looked around for someone who looked like a "Chaz." Was that short for Charles, or was he going to be one of those alien types and actually spelled it with a silent Q or something?
