Ben was back for his last shift at his job and was making the most of his time (and his last paycheck) by putting together a small mountain pile of electronics that he was going to take with him when he left

"Oh, good," Topher said, sticking his head inside. "You weren't eaten by a tiger."

A kumquat landed on his head and then rolled to the floor.

"...what."

"I don't even ask any more," Ben said with a shake of his head. "And no, I wasn't eaten by a tiger, a dinosaur or a goat."

"I'm pretty sure the goat was friendly," Topher informed him. For whatever that was worth. "Why'd you leave, anyway? You missed the part with the jungle."

"I told Ender I'd be home by two," Ben replied with a tiny smile. "He's not a drinker."

[dollpocalypse]

He had noticed that, Ben, yes. "But... jungle."

Everyone loved a good safari adventure, right?

"Had my fill of weird locations over the last few weeks," Ben said. "Did you and Billy have fun?"

[dollpocalypse]

"Um." Mean, Ben, making him blush like that. "Yeah. Going out like that was, uh. New."

Very articulate.

He tilted his head. "What happened over the last few weeks?"

Ben waved his hand. "I went home. Things got weird as usual. One of the planets we visited was a jungle."

Very helpful, Ben.

[dollpocalypse]

"And everything in your home world sucks," Topher summarized. "So that must've been fun."

[momslilassassin]

"Oh, it was a party every night."

That much sarcasm was probably illegal.

[dollpocalypse]

"So, like, dragon monsters, or more like ninja assassins?" Because it was definitely one of the two.

[momslilassassin]

"Kind of a combination of the two," Ben replied. "I won't miss it."

[dollpocalypse]

"Uh, yeah, I can't blame you." Seriously, Ben's universe had to rank somewhere among the top five meanest dimensions. "So you're, like. Ready to go, and everything?"

[momslilassassin]

"Getting there. I still have to pack and stuff, but we're not leaving for almost a week," Ben replied. "Ender's ready to go."

[dollpocalypse]

"Yeah, I bet." Because Ender. "The... spending-forever-on-a-ship thing probably doesn't even weird him out."

Figurative forever. He hoped.

"He's really looking forward to it," Ben replied with a small smile. "I think he'd been just as excited if it was him by himself just going."
