Our Lady of Fandom, Friday Early Morning

Jul 27, 2012 11:25

It was really not a good idea for Alec to be out today. The last two times he'd gone out, after all, he'd wound up injured. He did not really want to go for a third here.

But detention was being stormed tomorrow, and as a Shadowhunter Alec had access to a resource that a lot of the mundanes in the Resistance didn't: holy weapons caches.

So -- ( Read more... )

Jace, of course, had been following Alec around ever since he spotted him while patrolling. He could tell Alec had used glamours this time around even though Jace himself could see through them, so he was especially interested to see where he was going.

When Alec went into the church Jace followed, silently asking for permission before going inside. He lingered in the back of the church waiting for the right time to make his presence known.

Alec really needed to work on his ability to notice creepy stalkers lurking in the background.

Because as it was, he was totally absorbed in his task of kneeling in front of a trunk full of weapons with his back to Jace, searching for a dagger to bring back to Sparkle. Crossbow, crossbow... oh, gremlin repellent, he'd have to remember that. And -- there. A dagger. He slipped it into the inside pocket of his jacket, then turned his attention back to searching for other things that might be useful.

Jace wasn't surprised by what Alec was doing. He was actually a bit disappointed that he hadn't thought about clearing out that cache himself. Oh well, he could just grab something now. He made his way down towards the altar slowly, running his hands along the pews as he walked.

"Stocking up?"

Crap. Jace again.

Alec stood up slowly, not letting go of the bow he'd most recently grabbed. Last time he hadn't been armed; today he was, and he wasn't about to waste that advantage.

"I figured it couldn't hurt," he said carefully, making sure to keep the weapon pointed at Jace. "I would've thought you'd've done this already, though."

"Slipped my mind." A lot of things slipped his mind these days. He looked down at the bow in Alec's hand. "Going to use that on me?"

"I might." He wouldn't. "Are you planning to have someone beat me up again?"

"You could have avoided getting beat up," Jace pointed out, walking closer. "Defended yourself a bit better."

"It's a little hard to do when you've been shot by an arrow with only an iratze to heal it," Alec said defensively. Half his attention right now was going toward keeping his hands from shaking, because wouldn't that be embarrassing. "But if what you were saying was true then I didn't have a chance to begin with."

"Natalie is quite the fighter for a mundane," Jace agreed with a nod. "I didn't bring her with me today. I figured we could use some alone time."

That didn't sound ominous at all.

Alec sighed tiredly. "What do you want, Jace?"

"To spend time with you." Wasn't that nice of him? "Can't a Shadowhunter spend time with his parabatai anymore?"

"Without trying to kill him? You tell me."

Jace shook his head. "I wouldn't try to kill you, Alec. I have never tried to kill you. If I wanted to I would have succeeded by now."

Well. It was true.

"One of these days I will have to bring you in, I'm afraid."

"You've been taking your time about it," Alec pointed out. For right now, keeping Jace talking seemed like a good bet. Jace really did like to talk, after all. Plus, he maybe did want to know the answer here. "Any particular reason?"

"You're fun to play with." That is what he thought the answer was, anyway. He ignored the fact that there was some voice in the back of his head telling him not to put Alec in any real danger.

"Why don't you just come quietly? Things would be easier that way." And maybe Umbridge would just curse Alec or shove him in detention instead of killing him.

"Because I haven't been mind-controlled into thinking Umbridge's side -- your side -- is doing the right thing," Alec said. It was kind of a dealbreaker. "And I don't want to be, either."
