The Perk, Saturday Evening

Jan 14, 2012 17:36

It was a tearful Elle who sat at a table, holding her toddler son in her lap.

"I just don't understand," she said to the cameras, looking dramatically pretty. "Why does he always have to be late? It's like he just doesn't care about us ( Read more... )

Jon had long given up trying to ignore the cameras that followed him around, and was actually chatting with the guys as he walked towards The Perk.

"Yeah, she bitches about the fact that I'm always late and says that I don't care about them, but really? I own my shop, I have to take care of things so that I can pay the bills. I don't see anyone else stepping up to put $40 shoes on our kid's feet. It seems like she thinks having my own business means I can take off whenever I want and still have the money rolling in, but that's not the way it works."

He stopped talking as he opened the door and smiled when he saw Elle and the baby.

"There's my boy."

Elle's eyes lit up when she saw Jon come through the door. "Look who it is," she cooed to their son, laughing softly as the baby made giggly noises and baby grabby hands in Jon's general direction.

"We're glad you're here."

Because she would be nice, even if she wanted to complain about his being late. There were some things you just didn't do in front of your baby, and argue was one of them. She tried to avoid that whenever possible... and she and Jon did argue a lot sometimes.

If arguing was an Olympic sport, they would be on Team USA.

Jon happily scooped up the baby and grinned. "Hey Sonny boy, were you good for your mom today?"

"Everything good today?" he asked Elle.

"Pretty good," Elle said. "You were late -- " Because she couldn't not say something. " -- so that sucked, but you're here now so everything's okay." And then she gave him a smile, a real smile and not her usual smirk.

Someone was clearly trying to behave today.

Jon figured he deserved something for not rolling his eyes at that.

"I had an online order that was a bit difficult, but it's taken care of and I have the rest of the day for you two."

"Did everything get sorted out all right?" Obviously or he wouldn't be here, but she was at least trying to show an interest in what he did.

Not that it'd last, but points for the effort.

"Yep. Just a miscommunication as to what exactly they wanted, and it was hard to track them down to get a right answer."

He handed the baby an empty cup to play with.

"So, Dad called. Sam's got some conference coming up, and they were wondering if we could make it up to DC next weekend so they can see the kiddo."

Yes, Sam and Jack were just named grandparents!

"Don't see why not," Elle said. "It's been ages since they've seen the little guy."

And they were much nicer than her father.

There were convicted felons nicer than her father.

"What do you say, little man? Wanna go see Grandpa and Grandma? Maybe get some new toys while were at at?"

"I'm not sure which part of that he likes more," Elle said, laughing as she watched their son clap his hands together and bounce in his father's arms. "It'd be a tough call for me, too."

"Well, you'll be able to get in some girl time with Sam, at least." And he could get in guy time with his dad and Sonny Boy.

"Aw, that'll be nice." Sam was the closest thing Elle had to a mother figure. "I don't talk to her nearly enough."
