Yeah, so. Jake didn't follow the Canucks all that closely during their regular season, but hey- they were a Canadian-based team and they had a Newfoundlander on staff. That was reason enough, Jake felt, to cheer for in the final.

The pub was open, the hockey game was playing on the TV, and he'd even managed to convince Tino to don a blue and green

My first one was a sly one, hanging round the rink,
But they sent me off to Cornwall, as fast as you could blink,
In Moose Jaw I was right in love, the daughter of the coach -
He traded me for nothing, didn't take to my approach.

So good-bye, fare thee well,
There's no time for delay,
You'll see me at the face-off, or catch the play-by-play
So good-bye, fare thee well,
I'm glad you shared my bed,
But never trust a fellow with a helmet on his head.

It was Monday night. Charlie figured that was a good night to go out and get a beer.

The fact that there was a game on the TV when he did come in only validated this theory.

"Any good beers on special?"

Jake shrugged and picked a bottle at random. "Sleeman's?" he held it out.

Hey, beer was beer, no matter which side of the border it came from. "Sure," he said. "Hook me up." His chin quirked toward the TV. "How's the game so far?"

"Kind of terrible," Jake made a face. Although one of those goals had at least been Ryder's...

"Terrible in that your team's doing bad?" Charlie wondered with a sip of the beer and his eyes still on the screen. "Or just terrible overall?"

"In that first sense," Jake said. "Dunno what it is about this arena, but..."

And that managed to get something that almost looked like a grin out of Charlie. "Yeah," he said. "Gotta be the arena."

"Well, when you compare it to how they play at home," Jake shrugged. "It's like they's two different teams, b'y."

"Yeah," Charlie allowed, though he followed it up quickly, getting animated since this was one of the few topics of conversation he actually could get animated about. "But turf shouldn't matter. A good team is going to be good no matter where they're playing."

Well, so he said now because it wasn't his team in question here.

"Well, they didn't make it to the finals by sucking," Jake felt compelled to point out.

"Neither did the other guys, though," Charlie countered easily enough with another deeply philosophical sip of his beer.

"Ah, but neither team has won an away game in this round," Jake waved his mostly-empty rum glass around.

"No kidding?" asked Charlie, with the dull fascination of a man completely turned around by that statement and he wondered why he hadn't bothered following much hockey this season. Probably everything with the move. He considered this over a long swig of his beer and then felt prepared to contribute a very thoughtful, "Huh."

"Looks like it'll be going to seven," Jake observed helpfully. Though hey, at least the boys in blue had managed to score a goal now.

"You guys usually play games in here?" Charlie asked, since that would be highly relevant to his interests.
