The Park - Late Friday Afternoon.

Feb 18, 2011 18:11

Rose had gotten herself a cup of hot chocolate from the Perk, but she wasn't into sitting around inside. She was way too restless to stay still so she wandered around the island, staying carefully away from MCA and certain parts of the beach. There was a pink tree in the park that seemed more peaceful than the rest of the island, but she wasn't ( Read more... )

Kennedy was a little bit at loose ends today; not fretting, exactly (okay, maybe a little bit), but she had less focus for her restlessness. She'd been on a jog around the island and had stopped when her phone beeped with a new email (oh god, she was turning into one of those people now, huh?) to check-- something from Constance about a train showing up in Sunnydale full of dead people.

Which was interesting, but not particularly useful information, and she'd have been frowning over that for a while if not for the call that came in after that.

So, cue one Potential Slayer hurrying her ass over to the swingset in the park, grinning.

"Holy shit, look who showed up after for freaking ever."

[[i am about to flee home but had to tag in first!]]

"Kennedy!" Rose was grinning back and closing the distance for a hug. "God, it's freaking awesome to see you."

There was a decided lack of mention of the time, yeah.

[omg yay tag! I'll be here all evening!]

"Same goes for you," Kennedy answered, already reaching out to sling an arm around Rose's shoulders. "How the hell've you been?"

"I've been missing this crazy place scarily enough," she admitted. "College classes aren't nearly as fun."

"Oh, god, you are not helping," Kennedy groaned. "My Watcher's pushing me about going to college, and I can't really work up a vague need to care. Sadly, I don't think sticking around is an option."

"Yeah, I don't think you're supposed to spend next year working at the gym or something," Rose agreed. "Hey, come to Lehigh - you can guard Lissa with me. Way better than actual college."

"I don't think I exactly meet the qualifications for that," Kennedy mused. "Also, kind of doubt I can sell that as a career option. Constance won't go for it, and neither will Dad. Even though it sounds like fun. I mean, the whole college experience without the midterms stress?"

Rose made a face. "Yeah...except to stay close enough to her, you kind of have to stay in class. I had an econ exam last night."

The look on Kennedy's face hinted that running laps for hours would be more fun. (Probably because it would be.) "Sounds like a thrilling experience. Worth it though, yeah? Being a guardian and all that. If I go, it means I'm pretty much done."

(It so would be. Also doing five hundred push ups would be more fun)

Rose had to consider everything for a moment. "Yeah. It's not what I expected sometimes, but I don't want anyone else protecting Lissa." She frowned a bit at Kennedy. "You mean done like...probably not with the Slayer thing?"

"'cause who else would do as good a job as you, right?" It was how Kennedy would've approached the job, anyway. "I get that. You two are all tight and stuff."

She found a bit of swingswet framework to lean against and shrugged. "And yeah, that. Constance won't come out and say it, but she's less about the being-prepared and more about the consider-your-future lately. Like I ever considered anything else."

So yeah, she envied Rose that.

"You know it," she agreed, frowning a bit. "Jesus, whoever made up your Slayer thing was an idiot. Why only have one?"

"So only one person gets to be the cool kid?" Which, yes, was part of why she wanted it so much, admittedly. "But never mind that, that's depressing. I want to hear about some of the cool stuff you've been getting to do, and by cool stuff I don't mean econ lectures."

"Do I look like a huge geek?" Rose asked, wrinkling her nose at the characterisation. "Actually don't answer that." She shrugged. "It's a little weird. It's all - training and being ready all the time. People actually look at me like I'm in charge or something."

Kennedy's entirely elegant snort translated to 'geek runs in the opposite direction from you, please.'

"Is that a bad thing? Being in charge, I mean. 'cause that sounds pretty cool."

Rose couldn't help grinning at the snort. "No! Totally not. It's awesome." She shrugged, trying to put it into words. "I just wasn't so much expecting people to actually listen to me when I tell 'em to stop talking and let me think."
