Alex stopped at the bar to refresh her drink before heading to her seat. she didn't recognize the name John Watson, but maybe she'd know him when she saw him. And if not, that was the point of coming here, meeting new people, wasn't it?

"Evening," John said, settling down in front of her - and letting his own fresh drink thunk down on the table. "Hope the dates haven't gone too badly thusfar."

His hadn't, so he was in good spirits.

"An old friend from the last time I did this, and a coworker I completely failed to recognise," John said. His smile tended a little towards the self-deprecating. "I'm a doctor at the clinic, and I... obviously need to spend more time at my place of work."

"She did say she was a hermit," John offered. The smile went up a notch. "So... what about you, then? Because I'd rather not wander in and find I'm talking to another colleague I've never met before."

"Not a doctor," Alex laughed. "We might still be colleagues, if you're teaching. I have an office in town, Cabot and Associates. Make any lawyer jokes you'd like, but try for something original. I've heard most of them too many times."

"Lawyer jokes... lawyer jokes..." He pretended to think on it for a moment. "Can't say I've ever really heard any, and I'm afraid making up jokes on the spot isn't really my, er, strong point."

Pause.

"But yes, I also teach at the school, as of this semester."

"They mostly focus on us being soulless sharks who chase ambulances and overcharge," Alex explained. "It gets repetitive, so I'm happy to skip those. What is it you teach, this semester?"

"Sexual education," John said, with a wry little smile. "From a scientific point of view. For the most part."

The 'for the most part' occurred whenever Sherlock ran off on a tangent about something, like why people should never reproduce or how you should at least have the decency to take a shower and scrub off your partner's cologne if you absolutely had to commit infidelity with said partner.

"Yourself?"

"Nation-building," Alex said. "Which is a fancy term for me getting students together and making them talk about all their preconceptions about government, or the lack thereof. We're running a thought experiment where they get to be leader of a country, and have to set up the infrastructure from scratch."

In other words, Alex was kind of a nerd.

John liked clever women, though, so that earned an interested smile. "It'll definitely send their minds working," he said, in approval. "Considering all the problems involved in--"

...and that was the noise of a zombie possibly nearly losing one of its fingers on the piano keys.
