Jane, it appeared, had another job, which, at first, she was just a little bit cross over because she felt that Mr. Kyōraku had rather tricked her into it, just as she felt, but couldn't exactly prove, that some of the things Mr. Kyōraku had said might not have been exactly appropriate. But, tricked into it or not, she had a responsibility now, and she was not going to turn her back on that, even if she'd much rather spend her Saturdays out in the preserve, improving on her teal deer migration charts.
Once she arrived, though, things got much better and she found herself not only engaged in a conversation with Mr. Nahasapeemapetilon about India and his religion, but he also clued her into the cheese panda's sleeping patterns, so that, when he was up and about and monitoring the cheese aisle, Jane was there, too, crouched behind a stack of cans and scribbling down notes and sketches.
A general store was hardly the place she'd expected to find such fascinating data, but she realized that perhaps this extra job wouldn't be so terribly bad after all.
