Homecoming! Town Hall - Saturday Evening [Post II]

The dolphins still leapt toward the moon from the wall, the streamers still sparkled, but the ice sculptures were drippier and the punch had probably been ... enriched by now.

Homecoming continued. And, in just a moment, the Homecoming Court would be announced.

Spiked punch, whatever's left from earlier tonight, and some trays of any fresh nibblies that might strike your fancy.

Percy had wandered out of the dark corners due to the food being too much to resist. It meant that he might run into Luke but he thought he was prepared for that.

It wasn't that awkward. It was just...really, really awkward. Percy made a face and busied himself with getting food.

Luke hadn't realized that Percy left his dark corner (yes, Luke saw him) until he was standing right next to him. He had kinda hoped it'd be Jason just for the sake of avoiding this conversation but, nope, Luke could see the gray in Percy's hair.

He knew walking away would just make things worse, so after a moment Luke decided to man up and speak. "Um, hey."

Yes, he was very eloquent.

Percy did not jump, thankfully. Luke's voice surprised him but he didn't jump. He glanced over at Luke (and his nice suit) quickly before looking back at the food.

"Oh. Hey, man," he said oh so smoothly. "How's it going?"

"Good," he said. "Wearing a tie kinda feels like a little kid is choking me, but other than that, good."

Well this wasn't completely horrible yet. That was something.

"Yeah, I went without the tie tonight," he said and patted his chest. "I don't think I could tie one if I tried. Mom didn't know how and I wasn't gonna let that fat ass, Gabe show me."

"Yeah I never had to do one before tonight either. It's not like camp has formals," he said. "It took me more time than I'd like to admit to get it right."

"What, you just go trial and error or did you look up some instructions?" Percy wondered. "I didn't think tying a tie was a power of children of Hermes."

"Trust me, it's not," he said, pulling at the tie a little. "But we are pretty adept at surfing the internet. Found instructions there."

"You'll have to show me next time," Percy said without thinking. Once he realized he'd just asked Luke to pretty much touch him, he blanched a bit.

"Uh, you know, if I decide to come again. Might not." They weren't completely truthful but they were the best he had after flustering himself.

"Yeah, I'd help you," Luke said, turning his attention to the food. "If you decide to go to the next one. Do you not like it here or something?"

"Nah, nothing like that though the dolphins on the wall make me wonder if people are sniffing glue."

He shrugged and valiantly tried to keep this conversation totally superficial and bland. So far, it was working pretty well.

"I just feel out of place, I guess. Not something we train for at camp."

"I would have thought that the dolphins would make you feel at home," Luke said lightly. He could deal with this superficial thing. "It it makes you feel better, I'm pretty sure Nico is just as uncomfortable as you are."

"If the dolphins were in the water, yeah maybe, but they're in the sky. More Zeus's thing than mine," Percy said, shrugging. It was still weird being thought of as the guy that was friends with sea life.

"How're you so comfortable?" Percy asked even if he knew the answer. "Son of Hermes thing or a Luke thing?"

"Why would it make me uncomfortable?" Luke asked. "It's just a bunch of dressed up people dancing around to music."

"I dunno, that's why I asked," he said, raking his fingers back through his hair and wincing. "I'm just waiting for a cheerleader to suddenly...not be a cheerleader."
