Strawberry Social - The Park, all day

Aug 15, 2010 03:09

Vida had been busy since early that morning, setting up the park to be perfect for the Strawberry Social. Fortunately, the park was bug free, but she had music playing to drown the sounds of Celine Dion from nearby residences. Said music tended toward the pop side, bouncy and happy, with a side of disco. Drake had nothing to do with that, really ( Read more... )

There were typical picnic fixings, salads and chips and grillables, as well as just about every strawberry dessert you could think of. Fresh strawberries, of course, as well as chocloate-covered strawberries, strawberry ice cream, strawberry cheesecake, strawberry jello, strawberry parfaits, strawberry shortcake, strawberry tarts,
strawberry jam, and strawberry pie. For beverages there was strawberry lemonade, strawberry milkshake, and strawberry soda, as well as strawberry margaritas,
strawberry beer, and strawberry wine for any who wanted to indulge.

Jason wasn't big on things that involved the word "social" but he couldn't ignore so much free food in one place. He wasn't sure if he'd be able to walk away with any of it, especially the deserts, but at least he wouldn't go hungry here.

Bruce knew Jason from some classes so far this summer, but he couldn't recall talking to him for any length of time. He decided to change this. "Jason. Have you tried any of the food yet? I'm looking for opinions before I try anything."

Part of the reason Bruce couldn't recall talking much to Jason probably had to do with Jason still being weirded out by Bruce being a teenager here. Some Fandom things took more adjusting to than others.

"Uh, the chocolate-covered strawberries are good," he said after a moment, once he'd gotten his mouth working. "So's the cheesecake. I'm not sure about the jello though, but that's more of a jello thing."

"Not a fan of Jello?" Bruce asked. "Is it because of what it's made from, or just the end result?"

"I don't really mind what it's made out of, but I don't see the point in eating something that makes you feel like you didn't actually eat anything, you know?" Jason said.

"I can see that," Bruce said. "And even if there's real food in the Jello, that just makes it awkward."

The Dynamic Duo, ladies and gentlemen. Talking about Jello.

Hey, if someone tried to steal the food, they'd totally spring into action! For now, Jello it was.

"Real food doesn't help, it just makes it more gross," Jason said. "I'd stick to the real desserts if I were you." He probably didn't need to be grinning quite so much, but giving advice to Bruce was such a change from the natural order of things that he couldn't help but enjoy it.

"Thanks for the tip," Bruce said. He couldn't help but notice the grin. "You seem to be having fun here."

"Oh, I am," Jason said, trying to tone down his delight to not look too weird. "Not here at the social, I mean, although I guess this isn't so bad. I just think it's interesting when the people in town do weird stuff like this."

"It's a change from the typical Fandom experience," Bruce said. "It's hard not to think that the whole thing's going to be spoiled by gremlins or something."

"Or black holes or something," Jason added. "I'm trying hard not to think that same kind of thought and jinx things. Not every event gets ruined by weirdness, right?"

"Most of the events go off just fine," Bruce said. "It's the quiet days, or the days after these events that you have to worry about."

"Why?" Jason asked, before trying to answer his own question. "People get complacent? They don't expect anything else to happen right away, and that leaves them open to get even more caught by surprise?"

"Maybe that. I haven't ruled out that the island has enough sentience to appreciate irony, either," Bruce said. "That's the best way I can explain some of the things I've seen since I've been here."

"Like what?" Jason asked. "I've only been here for the summer, so I haven't seen as much as I've heard about."
