Fight Club, Atlas Gym, Sunday Night

Tyler seemed a little worn-out as the group gathered today. "Welcome to the end of the school year," he said flatly. "Next weekend, finals are done and we're pulling up stakes until things settle in a little for the summer. Let's make our fights today worth it. Zack was already unfastening his armor as he made his way to the mat, and had tossed it toward the wall where it landed with a bit of a clatter against the Buster Sword.

He was even going to warm up with a few squats while he waited for his partner to join him.

Bruce walked onto the mat and gave Zack a quick but still respectful bow. "Are you all warmed up?" he asked.

"About as warmed up as I ever get," Zack agreed, nodding his hello to Bruce. "I take it you're ready, too?"

Call him crazy, but Bruce struck Zack as the kind of guy who very rarely wasn't ready.

Bruce gave a nod 'yes' before rushing forward and aiming a kick at Zack's chest.

[OOC: Sorry for the delay there! I'm fully around now!]

Zack didn't bother blocking, and didn't bother moving to get out of the way. If Bruce wanted to start the match, then Zack wanted to see what kind of strength he was going to have to expect, here, so that he'd be able to judge what his opponent was capable of.

The verdict turned out to be a touch of 'ow' with a quick huff of air and a step backward so that he wouldn't end up on his rear. He wasn't going to be activating Combat Mode, here, but he wasn't going to let Bruce kick him like that again either.

He cracked a grin and moved forward with a fist of his own aimed toward Bruce's jaw. He was holding back a little, mind. He didn't want to risk accidentally breaking anybody's neck on his first swing today, either.

[OOC: Totally fine! Yo!]

The punch connected, knocking Bruce back a couple steps. That hurt. Zack was as strong as he looked. Still, he had been hit harder in recent weeks. Bruce tried to shake off the pain before stepping toward Zack and delivering a quick one-two to Zack's stomach. The goal was to wind the bigger guy, then start trying to knock him down. He was pretty sure it could work.

Well, now that their initial blows had been exchanged, Zack was going to put a little bit more effort into making certain that not too many more were going to actually connect. He blocked the first punch, and missed the second, mostly because he was swinging another blow for Bruce's own stomach. This one had a bit more thrust behind it than the punch he'd thrown before.

Zack wasn't just as strong as he looked. He was far, far stronger.

Bruce double over when the punch connected, going down to a knee. He hadn't been expecting that.

So Zack had the height, reach, and clearly strength advantage. Since he was in a crouching position anyway, Bruce leaned back and aimed a kick at Zack's knee, expecting it to bring Zack down to his level.

What it accomplished was... something like that. Zack went into a roll as the kick connected, coming up in a crouch a little off to the side and offering Bruce a small grin.

And a wave. Greetings, from over here!

Bruce sprung forward from his crouch, taking a few steps before leaping and aiming a kick at Zack's head.

Zack was actually kind of attached to his head. It was one of those parts of his body that he would rather not have flying feet come in direct contact with. And so he ducked even more closely to the ground under Bruce's foot, jumping up and toward Bruce. Toward whatever part of Bruce just happened to be there at the time. And he was leading with his shoulder.

Bruce managed to twist slightly when he saw what Zack was doing to make sure the shoulder didn't ruin his chances of making that kid from last weekend happen someday. But he still had a shoulder driven into his lower gut, knocking the wind out of him again. He wildly threw a punch at Zack's face without a whole lot of power behind it. He just needed to stun Zack for a second to get away and catch his breath.

A wildly thrown punch, even without a good deal of force behind it, when making contact in the right spot? Would still get the job done. Zack grit his teeth a bit and raised a hand to press to his cheek, because a blow to a relatively fresh scar, when it ran as deep as the one on his face just so happened to, did sting just a little, yes.

It wasn't a long-lived distraction. Zack brushed it off easily enough after his initial reaction. But it was there.

That gave Bruce enough time to get his breath back and reconsider his strategy. He needed to wait back and watch for a mistake to give him an opening. He was on defense for the moment. Bruce held a hand out and curled his fingers toward himself in the universal sign for 'Bring it.'
