Karla nodded at Hoshi and gave the other girl a weak smile. "Since it hasn't worked with anything else, wanna see if you can hit the hat off me me while we're sparring?"

"Something that isn't my face!" Karla agreed happily. "I like this plan!"
She was very, very glad that Hoshi had been chosen as her sparring partner. To the best of her knowlege, she hadn't flirted with, bespelled, made out with, or humiliated herself in front of the other girl this week. It was a bonus!

That's because Hoshi had kept a very low profile after the events of the previous weekend.
"I'm not sure if I'd have a shot at hitting you in the face," said Hoshi, falling into her fighting stance. "My training in aikido focused heavily on defensive moves. I can protect myself fairly well but I don't score a lot of hits."

Karla gave Hoshi a wry smile, also settling into a fighting stance. It was much less hesitant than it had been at the beginning of the summer, which was something.
"That's okay," she replied. "I never received any formal training until I arrived here. If I was fighting, it was usually with my cousin, which meant just a lot of flailing. And Craft."

"Martial arts really seemed like a mental exercise, teaching me how to focus and concentrate," said Hoshi. "It wasn't until I got to Fandom and something attacked me that I realized it would help to be able to hit back!"
Her eyes focused on Karla's hat as she planned her attack. Eventually, she decided on a simple front-of-head strike with her hand, aiming a little bit higher for the hat itself.

Quandary: to dodge or to let Hoshi hit the hat, hopefully taking it off?
Karla ducked out of the way, then returned with a hesitant swing towards Hoshi's midsection. She had some moves, but it was clear that she wasn't entirely comfortable using them.

Hoshi had left herself open to an attack, and though she moved to block Karla's swing, it still made an impact. "Ooph! Guess going for the obvious move was a bit too obvious, huh?" she asked, twirling to her left to get into a better defensive position.

"Don't worry," Karla said, "I'm okay with--whoa!" Whatever else she was going to say got lost as she tumbled to the floor. Rolling over, she hastily got on her feet. And checked her hat. "Dammit, still there."

She paced around Hoshi, looking for any obvious vulnerable point to continue her attack--unwittingly leaving herself fairly open.

Realizing that Karla may have dropped her defenses a bit, Hoshi went for the legs, using a sweeping move to knock the other girl off balance.
