Theodoric of York: Wednesday afternoon

Layla usually wasn't one for a beauty salon, manicures, pedicures, massages or the like but classes were now over for her and coming from her conversation with Karla the other day it seemed like the thing to do after a busy summer quarter ( Read more... )

Karla had decided to go for the full spa package, considering she'd never done this before. Though she seemed a little dubious now that the women were approaching her to wrap her in mud and seaweed. "This is supposed to do what for me?" she asked.

"Guys? Why am I beaing smeared with things? And--wait, I'm supposed to pick out a color for my toes?!"

"The seaweed and mud are good for your skin," Layla snickered. "And the color thing is supposed to make your feet look pretty."

Layla wiggled her toes as if to emphasize that point.

"Try telling that to the Court," Karla muttered, trying not to feel self-conscious as she stood, half-naked, and began getting plastered in mud and wrapped with seaweed. "Considering the number of times I got in trouble for coming home muddied head to toe."

The rainbow of colors presented to her for her nail selection was almost a bit daunting. "What colors should I pick?" she asked Layla. "What colors did you pick?"

"I went with basic pink," Layla replied. "Just seemed like a nice color. Of course people aren't going to see my feet in my sneakers but I'll know if my toenails are pink or not. I'd say either go with pink or your favorite color."

"My favorite color is dark blue," Karla said, then pointed at a bottle. "Arctic Seas," she read aloud. "I like that. Sure. I think I'll go around barefoot for the next few days, just to show them off."

She glanced down at herself, draped in seaweed. "I look like a burn victim," she said. "Or a mommy, like on teevee."

Oh, Karla...

"You're skin will look great when you're done," Layla said from her mudless and seaweedless position. "And maybe just wearing sandals would be better so you have at least some protection on the bottom of your feet."

Karla frowned. "I'll have to see if I bought any sandals with Emma," she said, trying to remember. "Probably, considering we bought out almost the whole store. I don't really mind going barefoot though. I'm not Blysse or Tahiri, but I've gone without shoes often enough."

Then she snapped her fingers--or tried to, because of the mud. "That's it! That's why you look familiar. You look like Blysse." Karla was not always adept at putting things tactfully.

"Different hair, but we got the whole doppelganger thing going for us," Layla said with an amused look. "Plus I don't have a wolf as my constant companion."

"That did make it easier, yes," Karla grinned. "That and Blysse says as little as possible, I think. For all that you look alike, I don't think anyone's going to be mistaking you for one another."

She cocked her head to the side. "Is it weird? Having a doppelganger? Or did you know you would?"

"I knew there were doppelgangers here," Layla replied. "But I didn't know about Blysse or that she looked like me. In fact she's one of the people here I don't know about. Which... well I'm pretty sure Blysse is a good person but usually that kind of thing ends badly."

"Did you know about me?" Karla asked, surprised. "And what happens when you don't know about someone? Why wouldn't you?"

"Usually when I don't know about a person? Something is blocking me," Layla replied. "The first time it happened one of my friends was brainwashed and he killed an innocent man. The next time it happened I almost drowned and my friends almost died. Then when that spell hit the island when we talked in the hallway? I had no idea what was going on. When I don't know things? It's usually pretty bad."

[Can't remember so I ask: Okay to "know" Karla?]

"I see," Karla said, her own training as a Black Widow helping her understand. "It's more than simply seeing too many paths. It's as if there's an actual curtain drawn between you and the truth? That's not how visions work for me, but I don't have them nearly as much as you seem to. I'm a Black Widow, not a butterfly."

[It is!]

"Kind of," Layla replied. "I see the different paths and what will happen at the end based on what events might occur. But if there's a random element I don't know it can throw everything off."

"How do you see them?" Karla asked, shifting a bit to see Layla more fully. That only drew the wrath of the spa tech, who, with a sharp word, made Karla shift back. "I have to spin a web and read it to see this things. Are these visions with you always?"

Unfortunately, this did not seem like something she could learn, like Lady Ghanima's Bene Gesserit lessons.

Layla scrunched her face up a bit. "It's more like I know. I don't see things, I just know it. Does that make sense?"
