The Arms Hotel Lobby, Friday

Mary wasn't sure why, but Gunther was pouting a lot today. He was also muttering in German. Maybe she should ask Hoshi if anything happened yesterday.

Her suspicions grew as she watched the gleeful look on Gunther's face as he put up his own menu on the specials board.

She's nervously watching the kitchen door.

Simon came down into the lobby, carrying his bags. "Mary," he said. "I... hope you don't take offence, but I've found a room of my own."

Mary was a bit flustered when she spotted Simon carrying his bags. "Oh! No, I'm not offended, just a little surprised," she said. "Where are you moving to?"

"25 Unicorn Street," he told her. "I'm renting a room from a man called Minsc. I just felt... well, as it seems that I'm going to stay here I might need something a bit more permanent."

"I understand," said Mary, relieved that he wasn't leaving for good. "There was a time when I looked at getting a regular house."

"But you never did?" Simon asked, then added: "Oh, and when I've settled in you're quite welcome to come over for dinner sometime."

"Well, that was also when I thought I was getting married and I had a pair of twins show up during the weekend with all the kids. It looked like I was going to need a lot more room," said Mary. "I'd be happy to come over for dinner sometime."

"Twins? You had children?" Simon hadn't heard about that particular Fandom madness.

"Sort of. In some alternate universe, I guess, I married my fiancé and we had a set of fraternal twins, which showed up in this universe for a weekend," said Mary. "It doesn't really look like it's going to happen anymore, though."

"I'm... sorry." It seemed like the right thing to say. "So they were... hypothetical children? And they just showed up?"

"They certainly felt more than hypothetical," said Mary. "This big vortex thing showed up in the park and all these kids started coming out, including a pair who started calling me Mommy. And they had red hair like mine but curls like George Michael. And they were just so sweet. It broke my heart when they told me that they had to go."

"Everyone had kids from another universe?" Simon suddenly looked a little worried.

"Pretty much everyone," said Mary. "My friend Charlotte at the York Gallery had a little girl show up the same weekend."

"The students too? River?!" Perhaps he shouldn't be asking this.

"Oh, yes, even River," said Mary. "I helped her out when her little boy got all fussy at lunchtime."

Simon tried very hard to imagine his sister with a child. He failed. "Was there, uh, a father?"
