Amber took advantage of a couple of those little weinies on a toothpick. And a few cubes of cheese. Being tipsy as she was, she didn't eat much. Wasn't hungry.

Claire filled a plate with cheese, crackers and fruit, got a beer, and lingered near the buffet to see if anything else looked good.

She was wondering how long the sushi had been out.

Cal wasn't sure what an acceptable amount of time was acceptable before going and trying to find Claire might have been, so he just hoped that when he decided to, it was acceptable and she wouldn't think that he was blowing her off or whatever because he was too busy talking to showgirls and actually drinking alcohol.

Which put him in an interesting state when he did track her down at the food tables, give her a small smile and say, "Hey."

"Hey back," Claire told him, happy he had found her before she had to track him down. "I saw you making friends with the showgirls. Hear anything interesting?"

Cal eyed Claire a little, wondering if her noticing him meant that she saw it and thought it was something that it was very distinctly not. He figured she had, since how would she have ever thought to guess that he was chatting them up because he was feeling like they were the only people in the room he could associate with?

"Kind of?" he said with a shrug. "They're all really normal girls."

Claire had mostly just been looking for something to say that went beyond 'Hi, Happy New Year.'

"Normal? That's the weird thing around here," she decided. "So this is not a bad party. Food's good, anyhow.

"There's a lot of people," Cal noted, looking down into his drink a little before sipping it again. He thought a little about what Amber said about his mood, and wondered if he should have even bothered Claire is he was going to be so quiet and dull. But it was effect of the rare alcohol in him, the sharpness of memories finally starting to wear off.

"That's what happens when you give out free champagne," Claire commented, and Cal's sip drew her eyes to his glass. "...wait, are you actually drinking?"

Cal looked down at his cup. "Whoa," he said, although he didn't make too much of attempt to put actual surprise in his voice, "who put that there?"

Cal shrugged a little, still looking down into his glass of Averna, which had quickly made its way toward being far beyond half empty, and took another sip. "My New Years resolution," he said, "is to become a raging alcoholic. I'm getting an early start."

"I agree," Cal said, sipping again and not noticing any snappishness. "So what's your resolution?"

"I hadn't made one," Claire admitted, backing down a little. He probably hadn't been trying to sound like a jerk. "Um, be nicer to my mom, maybe."

Not that she'd necessarily keep that one.

Cal quirked an eyebrow a little at that one. "I'm going to do that one, too," he decided, "although that's kind of been my thing ever since...you know..."
