It was time to go.

Cat stared up at him. Those animals seemed good at figuring out when you were about to disappear.

"Won't be back this time," he told her.

Cat gave a noise of disapproval.

"You could tag along though," he said, without much hesitation. "Heaven is full of tuna." Well, if you wanted it.

Mary stopped by with a picnic basket. She had planned on inviting Gabriel to the opening at the gallery this evening. Obviously, she hadn't heard the news.

"Mary!" Gabriel looked cheerful, eyeing the basket. "I could use some food on the journey." Well, he didn't need it, but it was nicer.

"I will," said Mary, somewhat perturbed by the odd smile. "You take care of yourself, okay?" she added.

Then she went to give him a hug. Mary couldn't help it. She wasn't about to let Gabriel go without a hug.

He tensed and didn't return the hug, but he didn't pull back either. 'A thing mortals do', he told himself silently.

Cat jumped against Mary's leg.
