All about the island, Sunday

Jun 22, 2008 19:40

There were more monsters today, herds of centaurs wandering, troops of gryphons flying, and the slither of the lamia as she made her way across the island.

Yesterday, some had learned caution. And some had not.

[ooc: today's fighty post! There is OCD today, and there will be a fight-a-great-big-monster post up later today. Don't forget to put ( Read more... )

There were plenty milling around the island.

It'd been a long night for Roy and Aly as they'd spent most of it out patrolling the island and facing more than one Immortal. Roy still thought they needed a better name.

The light was returning into the sky when they moved to the edge of the preserve, intending to check on things at the station and grab something to eat.

Aly's fingers brushed the edge of her knives, one after the other, ready to pull whichever was needed and still pissed about that cyclops that had taken off with one of them in his eye. Didn't he know those were hers?

Her eyes picked out some dark shapes in the sky swooping over the school, and she nudged Roy gently. "Gryphons again. Just decided to come this way."

He grimaced and tugged on his gloves as if he was worried they might have loosened since the last fight. "Have I mentioned that I hate the whole flying thing?"

"Fifteen, sixteen, maybe even twenty times," Aly said lightly, her eyes fixed on the creatures as they came closer.

"See? I must mean it," he said in the same, light tone and he unconsciously stepped forward to wait for the attack, carefully measuring when they would be close enough to set them to fire.

The flock of gryphons circled overhead, unwilling to get in any closer than they had to. They knew full well that the shadows they cast were enough to terrify any rational creature. Letting them stew in their juices a bit just made for better eating.

First one screamed than another, calling their superiority over these humans.

Aly rolled her eyes as she tracked the gryphons across the sky. "Such drama queens. Stormwings are the same way."

Roy tried to follow their movement, trusting Aly to watch his left side. "Between your Immortals and insane gods, I think I'm glad my world has neither."

"Hades isn't one of my gods," Aly shot back instantly, knife loose in her hand now. Napalm would have been nice right about now. Or a flamethrower. But then, she had Roy for that.

Just as the humans distracted themselves with talking, a gryphon dove, talons extended, thinking himself very sneaky not to scream and dive at the same time.

He really wasn't all that distracted. The instant the gryphon came close enough, Roy snapped his fingers together, flames rising up in the air to meet the animal.

"I meant gods in general," he told Aly.

Screeching in annoyance and a small bit of fear, the gryphon backwinged strongly, trying to get out of the way of the nasty fire.

Another member of the flock hissed, trying its own dive, this time aiming for the smaller human.

Gryphons dive fast but they aren't very mobile once they'd started, and Aly barely had enough time to grab a big branch and whip it at the gryphon's claws before dodging out of the way.

Claws that splintered the branch almost instantly. Nice that it wasn't her head.

Roy jumped back and out of the way as well. There was barely time to feel relief that Aly moved so fast. As the gryphon moved to turn, he blasted fire at it to keep it from making another dive.

Okay, see, this wasn't fair. Fire was mean! The gryphon was pushed back ass over teakettle, his beautiful feathers singed and almost burned off as he realised he was too low to the ground to take off again.
