The Perk [Sunday, Afternoon]

May 04, 2008 16:13

After the brunch, and a bit of town sightseeing, Shawn and Danny found their way to The Perk for coffee.

Things between the brothers hadn't really been right for years, but so far this weekend, they'd actually managed to get along for the most part. That couldn't last, really, could it?

Danny finally broke the quiet they'd fallen into.

"You know, they give out promicin shots now," he said.

"The neurotransmitter--" Shawn wasn't quite sure where Danny was going with this line of conversation, but couldn't help but be curious. "Why?"

Danny smirked, "Non-4400's are gaining abilities all over. You all aren't the only special ones these days. Take the shot, get a fifty-fifty chance of coming out of it a healer, being able to see the future, move things with your mind..."

"And what about the other fifty percent?" Shawn asked skeptically. That was definitely too good to be true.

"Promicin poisoning. The body rejects it, and they die," Danny replied simply.

"Jeez. And this stuff is, what, just available, now?"

There was a nod from his brother. "It's illegal, but I'm sure there are ways to get hold of it. Collier isn't going to give up handing it out anytime soon."

Shawn shook his head in disbelief. "Who would go for it knowing all that?"

"I been thinking of it," Danny replied defiantly.

Shawn stared at him, shaking his head. "Are you insane? Danny, you might die."

"I've got you, messiah of the forty-four hundred," Danny replied, shrugging a shoulder.

"And what if I can't fix that? You just don't have any idea what you might be getting yourself into."

"You know what? I've done my reading. I know what I'm doing." Danny huffed, shaking his head. "I knew it," he continued after a beat. "I did. Shouldn't have been stupid enough to think you'd want to risk sharing your spotlight."

"Aw, c'mon Danny, that's not it and you know it. It's dangerous. A big, big risk you'd be taking."

"I'm doing it. Whether you help me or not," Danny said firmly.

Shawn looked at him. There was no sign that he was making that up. Knowing his brother... He would. He'd do whatever it took.

"Just... wait," he said. "Give it a few months, maybe someone will find an antidote, a way to increase the odds, anything."

"And I'm just supposed to wait in limbo?" Danny shook his head. "No way."

"If you wait, just a little longer--" Shawn sighed. "I'll... I'll help you, alright?"

"You will?" It was Danny's turn to look surprised.

"Yeah. But you have to promise me, that you won't do anything dumb in the meantime."

Danny nodded grudgingly, standing up with his coffee. "Fine, but it takes too long, I'm doing it anyway. You can't stop me."

Shawn watched him leave, before dropping his gaze to his coffee. How long he could put his brother off, he wasn't sure, but this was the best he could do.
