Apr 10, 2008 05:24

Joanna was hungry, and loath though she was to admit it, the food at the Arms was pleasantly palatable. She frowned when she saw Mary, but perked up when she realized the other woman looked bothered.

"I trust I'll have more options than simply grilled cheese for lunch," she said, approaching Mary.

Mary frowned slightly when she saw Joanna. Of course she would come in today, of all days. "I'm sure Gunther would be able to make anything you want," she said.

"Oh, I doubt that," she commented. "But I'm sure he can fix something that will at least be adequate."

She looked at her nails. "How are the preparations coming for your... wedding thing?"

"Not good," said Mary. "I'm starting to wonder if getting married is the right thing to do. Have you ever been married, Joanna?"

Joanna was, in fact, currently married. "Husbands are useless things," she replied. "When you have the kind of status I do, no man's motives can be trusted."

"It's expected," she replied. "And mother can be an insufferable nag."

"That isn't exactly a problem for me," said Mary. "Really, though, I'm doing pretty well on my own. And if I had taken that job offer in Las Vegas, I would have been making lots of money, eating at the best restaurants, and going to the best clubs. But I turned it down because I wanted to stay here with George Michael."

"I never knew poll dancing could be so lucrative," Joanna commented. "Are you going to be having the wedding here?" She made a concerted effort not to sneer at the idea, and she wasn't that successful.

"Oh, I wasn't a dancer," said Mary. "I was an executive for a major hotel and casino. My job included managing the hotel and booking conventions."

"How exciting," she said dryly. She wouldn't deny the woman her delusions of grandeur. She was, after all, about to marry a teenager of questionable intent and maturity.

"So putting together a little wedding should be no trouble for you at all. Have you selected colors? I would hate to clash."

"No, I haven't really picked any colors," said Mary. "I, um, kind of dropped all the wedding planning. I'm not really sure anymore that getting married is a good idea."

Mary wasn't about to open up that much to Joanna. "Let's just say that we hit a bumpy patch, and I think I need to reconsider if getting married is the best thing for me," she said.

"Well, if you feel the need to get away, the yacht is always staffed and ready to put to sea. I find I think clearest when surrounded in the evidence of obscene wealth and power."

Joanna suddenly looked stricken. Had she just made a friendly gesture?
