The York Gallery; Wednesday [ 04/09 ] -- Grand Opening!

Apr 09, 2008 12:31

Tonight was finally the night. Everything was perfect, and, while perfect wasn't quite good enough for Charlotte, she figured it would just have to do. The gallery quietly seemed to glisten with its newness, its modernity, large opened spaces and smaller, quieter nooks and alcoves. Covered the walls on large, bright canvases were the works of Read more... )

For the mingling and the viewing of the exhibit, discuss the artist and his synergy of medias to create all those perdy pictures.

Nathan was there. He wore a suit since A) he guessed this event wasn't going to be black tie and B) Nathan liked wearing suits.

He looked at the pictures and tried to decide if he liked them.

Charlotte figured she could manage to spare a moment or two from fretting about whether or not they'd run out of watercrest finger sandwiches to sidle up beside a certain gallery observer, lift her eyebrow, and ask, "So. Any thoughts?"

"It's different," Nathan said. "I'm afraid I'm not familiar with the artist."

Different. Charlotte grinned a little, because that seemed such a throw-away answer. Luckily, she had more than enough else to say to motivate the conversation. "I just stumbled on him when I was looking around for what might be a good opening exhibit. His work is definitely something that catches the eye; there's a bit of a discussion element in the fact that he's working with a new sort of medium that is far from the traditional artistic considerations, and it's still very approachable. I'd love to do some more provocative pieces eventually, but this seemed a good, safe start, you know?"

"You'll have to forgive me," Nathan said. "I'm horrible when it comes to art. Comes from inheriting all the practical genes in the family."

Charlotte grinned a little. "Last I knew, being practical wasn't synonymous with lacking just a good, honest opinion," she offered.

"I like my opinions to be informed," Nathan replied. He indicated the picture he was in front of. "Why don't you tell me what you like about it?"

"There's no mistaking you work in law," Charlotte commented with a wry grin, "passing the buck like that. But, if you must know, I like the artist's confidence in working with a new sort of media. I admire his ability to transfer something from a computer into the form in front of us right now, the large canvas as if it was just done more traditionally. The fusion of the modern and the classic. And the themes. The landscapes. Stereotypically exotic locales, done in bright, bright, bright colors. It's an obvious fantasy, but there's still some truth in it. You know there is, because he works from photographs he's taken. So it's all about the timing. The obvious fantasy can be possible, you just have to be in the right place at the right time...It's still there, though. It's obtainable."

She may have gotten a little wistful, eyes dancing over the picture, toward the end of it.

Nathan smiled, able to enjoy her enjoyment if nothing else. "Well now, see? Now I can better appreciate them."

"By my terms, sure," Charlotte said wryly. "But what about your own? Those practical genes getting in the way of just having a simple aesthetic opinion?"

"I think I'm more of a traditionalist," Nathan admitted. "I'm more of a fan of oils."

Charlotte grinned, and, after a moment of hesitation to consider whether it fit into decorum, she nudged him slightly, playfully with her elbow. "See? That wasn't so hard now, was it?"

Nathan snickered. "I don't know. I may need a moment to recover."

Grinning a little wider, Charlotte said, "Well, take all the time you need, but I'll admit, I'd be interested to hear the opinion of a more traditional art appreciator for a change. I never really got a chance to come across many of them in the circuits that ran through my gallery back home."

"Da Vinci, Michelangelo - " Nathan grinned, hearing himself. "Maybe I just like other Italians."
