The Park - Sunday Afternoon

Jan 21, 2008 08:58

Simba had woken on Saturday in a strange place. He'd hightailed it out of there as soon as he was able and had spent the last day in the Preserve or, as he thought of it, a strange jungle, trying to find his way back to the Pride Lands ( Read more... )

There was a lion in the park.

Coraline stared.

A lion in the park. She should probably run away, or hold very still, or scream - depending on whether she followed the example set by television, movies, or nature shows.

Instead she just said, "Oh."

"You talk." Simba may have been a lion, but he made excellent use of facial expressions to show that yes, he was weirded out that this skinny beast he'd never seen before could talk.

"Yes," Coraline said, still staring, but more in puzzlement than anything else. "Are you going to try and eat me?"

It was important to know these things.

"I make a point of not eating anything I can't identify. Besides, I prefer wildebeest." Simba started circling around her. "What are you?"

"If I tell you, you'll be able to identify me," Coraline pointed out, turning to follow the motions of the lion.

She wasn't scared, precisely, but she was...cautious. "So you'll understand why I don't."

Simba laughed. "That's a good point." He stopped circling and tilted his head. "Will it do any good if I promise I won't eat you?"

"Possibly." The laughter was reassuring. Coraline smiled - and carefully didn't show her teeth. "Would you mean it?"

"Yes," Simba promised. "I won't eat you. How about this. I'll tell you my name and you tell me yours. I absolutely can't eat you if I know your name. It wouldn't be right." Unless he was starving.

"Okay." She plonked down into the grass in front of him and looked at him expectantly. "And I promise not, well, I don't know what I could do to a lion, but I promise not to do it."

"Okay. My name's Simba."

"Simba," she repeated, then nodded once. "I'm Coraline." She held out her hand, because, really, when would she ever have a chance to shake hands...paws with a lion again. "I'm a human being, a girl."

Simba gave Coraline a quizzical look, but nevertheless put his paw out to participate in what must have been a greeting. "Coraline. There. Now we know each other. Hey, do you know how to get to the Pride Lands from here?"

She'd just touched a lion's paw. This was turning into one of the best days ever. "I have no idea," Coraline told him. "Is that where you come from? The Pride Lands?"

Simba nodded. "And then I woke up here the other morning. It's a little different to what I'm used to. Do you live here?"

"I live here now, but my home is in a country called England. This is a school." Lions probably wouldn't know what schools were. "A place where humans, well, not just humans, here, go to learn things. We live together in a big building back there."

Coraline pointed in the direction of the dorms. "You shouldn't eat them, either."

Simba laughed. "Okay, okay. No eating humans unless I'm reeeally hungry."
