Gabriel hade picked up a coffee and a box full of donuts and was now devouring them all by himself. Perhaps someone should inform him of the health hazards involved with that kind of food for a human body.

Karal had handwavily with permission stopped by the church on Monday and Tuesday, wanting to check on Gabriel, but he hadn't been there. Today, carrying a paper bag of things he'd also handwavily acquired, he ducked his head in the church door. "Gabriel," he called. "Are you here? I did not bring Altra."

Gabriel pushed the now half empty donut box under one of the pews with his foot, then turned his head to look at Karal. "Hello," he said. "Not sick, is he?" he asked, refering to the cat, his voice strangely lacking in concern.

"You are here! I was worried about you. And no, I am not sure he can get sick," he added thoughtfully. "I brought you some things I thought you might need."

That got Gabriel's attention. "Yes, I'm here," he replied, confirming the obvious, his eyes fixed at what Karal was carrying.
