The 2007 Fandom Film Festival, The Park, Friday afternoon

Jun 01, 2007 01:32

The Park was set up for movies. There were chairs, blankets for the grass, popcorn, soda, judges, and - most importantly - movies.

Also importantly, there was a sign announcing that this was the 2007 Fandom Film Festival. Because it's not a real festival until there's a banner.

For some reason, GOB Bluth was your MC.

"This movie isn't as hot as it sounds from the title, but it's definitely worth your time. New resident Melody Valentine brings us a documentary about her time in a band with great name. It's a story of love, action, and people in silly outfits. Please sit back and enjoy Josie & the Pussycats."

Melody performed a drum fill before standing to introduce the film. "Okay, so ... this is about my band and our first tour and how we got to be rock stars, and it's about how you need to be friends and never, ever give up, even when evil executives try to kill you. I hope you like it!"

She clapped like a 3-year-old before taking a seat.

Documentary sounded promising! That was almost the same as a news reel, right? Sabriel was (foolishly) optimistic.

This was interesting. Karal had never heard music like this before, or seen instruments quite like the ones they were using.

:At least they have the good taste to mimic a superior animal,: Altra observed.

Karal hid a smile.

Jay rubbed his eyes. "I haven't seen this much bad singing, gratuitous T&A, or utter lack of a plot since 'Spice World.' Actually, I can't say for sure if it's better or worse, since I attempted to eat my own hands to distract myself from the horror that was 'Spice World.' I'd say that's a point in this monstrosity's favor, except that I have bite marks on my ankles. Huh. I didn't think I could reach my ankles."

"I don't know if you should get points for this being real or be slapped for being apparently this frivolous and insipid in real life, but I can at least tell you that ... it stinks."

More popcorn thrown at Jay's head. "This is far far far superior to 'Spice World!' I think it's great how women can be empowered in the music scene! Not that I want Jennifer to become a rock star, because she'd be much happier as a plastic surgeon married to a brain surgeon. But for those girls who really like music, it's a valid career choice. And I think the music is very peppy!" Libby applauded firmly, saying, "And I hate that you're making me be Paula."

"Lady, you couldn't be Simon if you tried," sneered Jay. "And this movie is garbahje and everyone involved should have lobotomies. Oh, wait, too late."

"Gene Siskel would roll over in his grave if he knew what depths movie criticism had sunk to," Libby scolded, aiming more popcorn at his head. "And I hated Howard the Duck and that last Die Hard movie. I can so be Simon!" Affecting a British accent, she added, "Specifics, be specific, if you must be harsh!"

Jay favored her with a glare. "I can be specific. What would you like to specifically know? Specifically, the cast couldn't act - oh, yes, it was a documentary. That means they speak like that all the time, which is horrifying. Specifically, the music was the most prepackaged crap I've heard in a while, and that's saying something. Specifically, the message was lacking and the plot nonexistent, and if someone thought this should be a movie, then that person is too dim to understand most of the words I'm using right now. And everybody hated Howard the Duck, if you didn't, you're a robotic cyborg. That's the test now. And if you could aim a little lower, then I wouldn't have to reach for the popcorn so much."

Libby up-ended the whole bucket over his head, and put her hands on her hips. "You missed the message because you sneered at the shininess, like all bitter French-loving arthouse movie critics. If it doesn't come with subtitles and a heroin addiction, you dismiss it out of hand. I think it was charming. Don't go anywhere, I have to get more popcorn."

Well, she was a bitch, but she was a bitch who gave him free popcorn, so he wasn't going anywhere. Besides, he wasn't moving. Not when he was covered in popcorn. Mmmmm. Popcorn.

Libby came back with two buckets, one to throw from, one to eat from. "And another thing! It's a documentary! And therefore the plot is Real Life, only with music! And Manon of the Spring was the most depressing movie ever!"

"I mostly agree with Jay," Mark concurred. "The music pretty much bites, and those girls wouldn't know real real life if it fell on them. But they get points for trying, and for being able to say their band name without laughing."

Not really Aeryn's style of music, but the film wouldn't be bad, right?
