Stuff for Sale: After Fifth Period

After class, and a handwavey conversation with River, Sam was waiting outside Stuff for Sale for her to show up--they both needed dresses, and she wasn't sure River knew about proms, so this promised to be a very interesting experience.

River new nothing about proms apart from that they included dancing - which was good - and that she needed a dress. And she was quite excited about Sam helping her to chose one.

She cheerfully waved to Sam. "What kind of dresses are fashionable here?" she asked.

"There are a lot of different kinds," Sam said, holding the door open, "so it's mostly about what you like to wear--there's big and fluffy, or tight and kind of slinky, or loose and kind of flowy, and they come in a lot of different fabrics and colors."

"Plenty of choice then," River said, turning her head to look at Sam while entering. Once inside she blinked and looked thoughtful. "What kind of dress are you looking for?"

"I never know," she admitted, "last year I ended up with two, since I couldn't decide between a short dress and a flowy one. I just end up wandering around until I see something I don't hate, but maybe you would have a better way."

"Don't have a better plan. But we could take notes and make a diagram, assigning points to the ones we prefer according to different categories," River said. "Did you wear both?"

"Not at the same time, no," Sam grinned, thinking that maybe River's note-taking system wasn't so bad an idea. "So, what kind of dress do you think you might like? We can start there."

"Suitable for dancing, not restricting movement too much," she said, then added: "Not designed for a curvy figure, since I'm not curvy." She thought for a moment. "What do you think would suit me?"

"Hmmm," Sam considered, then started searching the racks, "Maybe something like this? It's pretty, and makes it look like you're curvier than you are."

River's face lit up and she held the dress against her body. "Good for dancing. But will it stay up even without shoulder straps?" She held up another one. "Is this one good?"

[carter_i_am]

"I'm not sure, but we can try?" Sam pulled another dress off the rack and handed it to River, "Um, I'm not sure you'd be comfortable in that all night? It looks very...heavy."

River nodded. Comfort was important. Her face lit up at the dress Sam handed her. "That's good for dancing!" She placed it in a nrewly created pile of dresses to try on.

"Would this one suit you?" River asked, handing a dress to Sam.

Sam glanced down at herself, then grinned, "I'm not sure I have enough curves to hold it up either." She laughed as she imagined Jack, walking around with her and River, with the two of them trying to hold their dresses up all night. "Maybe straps aren't a bad idea." She picked up another dress, held it up to the light, and passed it to River, "It's longer, but might be more glamorous, if you want to go that way."

She held up another dress. "No. Just...no."

River giggled, both at the dress Sam showed her and at her picturing the two of them with dress problems. She held up the dress Sam handed her. "I like it. But perhaps too glamorous for me." She put it in the pile of dresses to try on, however. "Not technically a dress, but still nice," River said, holding up another one.

She held up another one for Sam. "Perhaps a little too... Inara. But it's nice."

"Ooh, I like the second one," Sam took it from River, then selected another one, "and who's Inara?"

"She lived on Serenity. Registered Companion. Had plenty of pretty dresses for her work." River held up another one. "What do you think of this one?" she asked. "It's glittery and good for dancing."

"And here's another one for you," she added.

"Oh, that's gorgeous, River," Sam nodded approvingly, "Jack won't let you out of his sight. And wow, that's bright. I'm not so comfortable being in a bright color--uniforms are olive green or blue, and that's what I usually wore."
