The Perk, Monday Afternoon [3/12]

Mar 12, 2007 14:27

After a walk -- well, a slosh -- around town checking out which buildings looked like they might be in need of some repair work after the flood, Xander scraped the mud off his boots at the doorway to the Perk and ordered himself a very big cup of coffee and a very big chocolate muffin. Then he settled down, pulled his laptop out of its bag, and ( Read more... )

Parker's Mondays have a nice routine: sleep in, get up, work out, then head into town. So it's late by the time she walks into the Perk to get a major mocha. Besides, she needs it after last night's lack-of-sleep.

She smile when she sees Xander, and wanders over after she's got her drink. "Hey, you. How goes it? Is Mauvaise Chance still standing?"

"Actually we stayed pretty dry. Even the basement," Xander says, pointing her to the chair opposite him.

Parker took the seat with a smile. "I have clams in my room. And a ruined comforter. They threw an octopus at me."

"...the clams did?"

Parker snickered. "Sorry. No, the mer-people who were catapulting stuff at the dorms yesterday. Clams, an ocotopus, jellyfish, and some sea urchins. I should never had opened my window to yell at them."

"Oh, like you're capable of not yelling at people? Even mer-people?" Xander ducked before he'd even finished the sentence.

A napkin, and several creamers, and a couple little packets of Equal were sacrificed as a comeback. "I can! Sometimes. When I choose to." She pouted at him, and took another sip of her mocha. "Maybe."

"You just keep telling yourself that. Like a positive affirmation. I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and I can refrain from choking idiots."

Parker nearly choked on her mocha, then grinned at him, eyes sparkling. "I can. Sometimes." She paused, thinking. "Okay, maybe not so much... although I did teach one of the new kids to use a gun Saturday without letting it explode in his hands. But then again, that's guns. And they might abolish Gun Club if I let that happen."

"And we couldn't have that - if you didn't have paper targets to fire at...."

"Exactly." Parker smirked back at him, tapping her fingers on her cup. "And shush. It's been...uh. Three weeks! Since I slapped someone. I'm doing well!" She swung a leg, and asked, "So, getting a lot of work out of this last disaster, do you think?"

"Might," Xander confirmed. "I fixed a leak in the post office before this whole thing really got going, but I can see where there might be some real internal damage on some of these places." He really shouldn't sound so gleeful about that.

"Which gives you lots and lots to do." Parker chuckled at him. "And I bet it's not even the money for you, is it?"

Xander laughed. "Nah, not really. I mean, I'm not rolling in it or anything, but I've got a lot of savings, and I'm still getting paid by the Council, and there's the rent from MCA. I just miss the work."

Parker cocked her head. "It must be nice, to like what you do." She shook her head. "How goes the Council work, anyway? We don't have any vampires on the Island. Right?"

"Yeah, it's kind of a bust for Mel without anything to fight. We're setting up the holosuite thing at MCA to be a training room, sort of."
