The Perk, Sunday Morning

Jan 22, 2007 00:20

After sleeping through most of Saturday, and awaking to a very odd radio broadcast, Jo decided the best thing would be coffee, and lots of it, so she made her way down to the Perk, where she ordered the strongest black coffee she could.

Listening to the podcast again, she wondered just how hard she hit her head on Thursday.

Bond had been up since before dawn, puzzling over the odd bits of information he'd gathered. In truth, he didn't have much, and when he'd finally called London and demanded to speak to M, he'd been told that she was here, in Fandom. That had led to a bit of breaking and entering, followed by a long lecture and very in the way of explanation.

M had warned him to keep his hands off her students, which Bond would have taken exception to if it hadn't been for his little tete-a-tete with Lana the night before. "How do I know which are your students?" he'd asked. "Exactly," had been her answer.

One thing the handwavey meeting with M had accomplished, though, was that Bond's mind was very much more focused on the job he'd come to do. A job that was making very little sense at the moment, but which he hoped Nadia could clear up for him ( ... )

Nadia arrived not in the least bit late, that's just an illusion caused by her mun's internet being bitchy, ordered a large coffee, and went to join this "Bond" guy.

She was slightly hung over. Having a dress-up party with a mega glam pop star will do that to you.

"Morning."

Nadia's state of mild hangover wasn't lost on Bond, and he kept his voice pitched low. He'd had mornings like that himself.

"Morning, Miss Santos. Can I treat you to a cup of coffee and some toast?"

He was offering coffee, and not tea.

Weeeeeeird.

"Sure. Toast sounds really good right now."

"I'll bet it does," Bond chuckled, getting up from the table to fetch Nadia's coffee and toast. When he returned, setting the food down in front of her, he cocked his head and said, "You didn't tell me you were a student of M's."

Nadia took a long sip of the coffee before answering. "I'm her TA. That's working for her. I didn't lie."

"Good point," he replied, nodding. She might go far in this business, he decided. "So, you're working on trying to figure out some odd occurrances. You're not the only person who's mentioned that. I've run into a few people myself who seem to be either confused, or suspicious. Maybe you can help me clarify a few things?"

"Quite possibly. Do you have specific questions, or am I just supposed to tell you everything I know?"

"Oh, well if you're offering to tell me everything you know, you'll save me a lot of time with the interrogation." Bond grinned, and glanced down at his cell to bring up one of the text messages. "Could you shed some light on a couple of possible code names? 'Elle' or 'El', and 'Zero'."

Nadia tried not to laugh. "El Professor. Also known as El Mariachi. No one knows his real name, but he's a vigilante from Mexico who was sent here to hide from the drug cartels that are after him. He teaches Guitar. And Zero isn't a code name. It's just actually her name. Skank Zero Hopeless-Savage. Her parents are punk rockers."

Well, that was enough to cross Zero off his list, but Bond wasn't quite ready yet to remove this 'El Mariachi' fellow. Nadia listed off enough watch terms -- vigilante, Mexico, drug cartels -- to make him figure it was worth his while to keep an eye out for the man.

He nodded. "Can you tell me anything this twin I'm supposed to have? 'Aziraphale', I think the name is, although I also have reason to believe he's the same fellow as this 'Mr Fail' I keep hearing mentioned. He seems to have quite a few contacts in this town. Not to mention a pretty suspicious sounding code name."

Must. Not. Laugh. So. Very. Hard.

Nadia took another quick sip of her coffee.

"He's a teacher here. He taught Prophesy last semester and is teaching Fairytales this semester." She set down her cup of coffee and looked Bond in the eye. "And he's an angel."

Fairytales and prophecy? Sounded like a crackpot. Still, might not be a bad idea to keep tabs on the guy.

"I'm sure he's a sweetheart," Bond said, raising an eyebrow. "But that doesn't mean you should just dismiss the possibility that he's who we're looking for."

Nadia raised an eyebrow. "No, I mean literally, he's an angel. With wings and a connection to heaven and all that stuff. And if you try looking for him, you're not going to find him."

Uh huh. Bond made a mental note to mention to M that she might want to have a look at her students' psych profiles.

"I suppose I could always go try the church," he replied. "But if you're sure he's not our mark, then what have you got that you think would be more useful?"

She had a feeling this Bond guy was not prepared for her theory about shapeshifting demons.

"There's someone pretending to be a student. Calls himself 'Stickbug' or 'Fearmalt'. As far as I can tell, no one has the same name for him twice. He's obviously the one to look out for."
