Billy had seen a map of the island and thought "rocky bits" sounded like a good place to work on his balance.

He found a good, narrow, sturdy looking rock, and perched atop it. After finding his balance, he removed his artificial leg, and stood on his one foot, hands pressed together in front of him, his eye closed.

Lana saw him arrive and half-watched him. She figured if he looked over and saw her she'd wave and smile, but she wasn't sure if he just wanted privacy.

Thus, the half-watching. Not openly watching or staring, but being aware enough that she'd notice what he was doing.

Billy opened his eyes after a moment and stared out at the water, then spotted Lana out of the corner of his eye. Didn't he used to be more alert than this?

In his surprise, his foot slipped. He managed to turn the fall into a controlled one, catching himself with one hand, and turning it into a kind of flip onto the ground. Then his artificial leg followed him off the rock and landed on his head.

"okay, ow."

Lana was on her feet before she even realized she was moving. "Hey, are you okay?" she asked.

Billy was slightly ashamed that he'd been surprised in the first place. He imagined that the whole leg hitting him on the head looked rather silly and he didn't have a sense of humor about himself yet.

"Fine," he groused. "Shouldn't have lost my balance like that." He rubbed his head. "Metal leg on head is not a fun combination." he added.

"Yeah," Lana said, "It didn't look like much fun. Billy, right? I met you the first day. How are you settling in?"

"Billy it is." he said. "And you're Lana. It's okay so far, takes some getting used to, but I guess you know that."

Using the rock as support, he bent down to pick up the leg, and began reattatching it. Which consisted of fitting the stump into the top and tightening some straps.

Lana nodded. "It took me quite a while to get used to all the weird things here." She couldn't help noticing his artificial leg, but she was careful not to stare as he put it back on.

Once the leg was on, he tested the joints, knee, ankle, and where the toes met the foot. Everything seemed in order. It moved just like a real leg, except that the toes were all one piece.

"How long have you been here?" he asked. "or, did you tell me that already?"

For a moment she thought he meant here at the Cove, but then she realized what he was asking. "About a year now. Two semesters and two summer sessions of Fandom excitement," she said with a grin.

"Wow, you must have seen it all," Billy said, impressed.

Lana laughed. "Somehow I doubt that I've seen everything that Fandom can throw at us."

Billy smirked a bit. "I do keep waiting for the other shoe to drop."

"Oh we all do. And sadly, Fandom appears to be some sort of shoe-wearing millipede. There are always more to drop!"

Billy smirked again. Really it was surprising how many different emotions could be conveyed with a smirk. It's not just for sarcasm.

"I guess it can't be too bad though, if you've stayed this long."

She smiled. "No, it suits me very well, actually."
