Well they obviously take a bit of getting used to, but that's a ridiculous reason not to watch the show -- getting over weird-looking animated character designs is incredibly fast and easy if you start watching frequently. Especially if you get invested in the characters (in which case I recommend sticking to seasons 2-9 if you ever do find the desire to watch it).
Well, I'm not embarrassed in the slightest to state the opinion that The Simpsons seasons 2-6 (maybe even 2-7) was THE best sitcom that has ever been made. As in, funniest, smartest, highest quality writing, most creative, best characterized, most brilliant world-building...everything. People dismiss it because even though it's still airing, it actually went completely downhill about 13 fucking years ago, and because it's animated.
From what I have seen, I don't think there's anything embarrassing about that opinion -- what I've seen of it (which was not just Season 1) I thought was brilliant. It's just that I couldn't call myself a hardcore fan and discuss the show, unfortunately.
And it's also that I still remember a few jokes from Season 1 that had me on the floor, like Maggie doing "Howl" in protest to Bart.
I haven't rewatched any episodes of the show in quite a while, and this conversation is making me really want to :) I dunno if I can call myself a hardcore fan at the moment either because it's currently just...not on my radar at all, but damn do I love it.
I feel like a complete poser saying this because I just started watching it a year ago and it's not like I grew up with it or anything, but guh, this. Incredible, beautiful show. The earlier seasons were definitely waaay better, but I'd still be sad if it got canceled, and I think the current episodes, while not as brilliant as the older ones, are still better than most crap- the Simpson's on a bad day is about the same level of quality as most tv on a good day, in my opinion. The classic ones are a *LOT* better, though.
I watched the 500th when it came out; I was all excited and in full-on fangirl mode. Not many people my age like it, though :/ Honestly, sometimes I wish it was like Glee and I could go to school the next day after a new episode and fangirl with people about it. I know it's not really that kind of show, though.
I think it's started going back uphill the last few seasons. It's still hit-and-miss, but the hits are stronger and come more often than they did for ages there.
The teeth, the noses, and the rubber guy. I get that it's his deal that he can stretch like that and it's part of his character but I just couldn't handle watching him do it; it looked too bizarre.
It's funny because I'm not all about anime characters being pretty, and some of my favorites are really not, but I guess One Piece just wasn't for me.

I haven't even seen enough to evaluate, sadly.

Though yeah, the art is still weird in the manga.
I'm trying to think of animes with unpretty characters, and I'm not coming up with anything (at least not as main characters). What do you watch?
