Sliders! Oh how I miss that show, particularly seasons 1 and 2. My dvds are just not the same. Also, this is now my personal head canon too.

OP is glad to share the headcanon! This was one of my favorite shows when I was younger. Despite the cheesiness and sometimes horrible mid-90s special effects, it really was a great show for the first few seasons. And then it went totally off the rails midway through Season 3. *sigh*
