That's funny, because I am(/was, when I regularly read fic) always more positively inclined towards stuff that has/had very few comments. I guess I can't resist an underdog?
Wow. Sad thing is, you're probably missing out on some of the best fic. In my experience, it’s the most mediocre of fic that gets a TON of reviews fast. Meanwhile some of the best stories I’ve ever read have only a handful of comments, despite being in heavily populated fandom. Personally, it takes me a while to review something that blows my mind. It can take me up to a week to figure what exactly I was to say, vs. the immediate “OMG LOVE” response.
One of the worst fics I've ever read (and not in the "so awful it comes back around to amazing" way, like "My Immortal") has 200+ reviews. I recognized the horror pretty fast but kept going out of some sick fascination to see if the author could top herself in eye-searing bad, but... yeah.
Meanwhile one of the best fics I'd read in that same fandom had 6 comments last I checked.
Didn't ff.net teach you anything? The number of reviews doesn't tell you anything about how good or bad a fic is. You're probably missing out on some really good fics.
This is a fresh, new troll. It's self-aware, self-deprecating, and non-confrontational, yet supports a viewpoint that's entirely ridiculous. I love it; there's nothing new in trollery I would have said and yet this day I'm proven wrong.
Sometimes a fic with a large amount of comments will inspire me to double-check to make sure I wasn't missing on anything. There's usually nothing wrong with a fic with few comments (unless it's in a very busy comm with generally high comments... then I still check it out to see what's up. lol.).
I would suggest scrolling down to the middle of the fic, and test reading a paragraph or two to see if it fits your style. That way you have more of a chance to find something that will interest you rather than relying on others to do the same. It works for me.
