I was also a voracious reader who finds it difficult to read a book steadily anymore. Fan fiction is addictive because it is instant gratification. You pick and choose what you want, and you can probably get it. Novels take more investment of time and energy, not to mention that you're more likely to be bored and reading can feel like a slog sometimes.

My internet habits pretty much broke my attention span. Now I have to basically put aside an hour every day where I turn off my computer and read a book. It's like exercising.

the fandom isn't "destroyed". not by drama-llamas or trolls or whatever. fandom isn't forever, the honeymoon is over, it get's quieter.
steve is dead, everybody hates tony. the canon isn't all that vibrant either atm.
