Authors Notes: Written for the prompt ‘Cherry’ that
callieach gave to me over
here. Takes place about half way through the most recent novel Bones to Ashes, and is dedicated to the one person I’m hoping will enjoy reading this as much as I’ve actually enjoyed trying to get it right.
Summary: “That was all they had left” his tone was neutral - the same kind of tone I was quickly realising I was going to have to get used to.
Cherry Coke
By the time 12 o’clock came around, I’d barely made it through half the piles in front of me. Clothes hanging limply against sweat glistened skin, I wished I’d opted for shorts this morning - out of the corner of my eye I spotted Hippo, bright orange Hawaiian style shirt, pale cream shorts, white socks and brown loafers - I changed my mind.
“They didn’t have any diet” Ryan stopped in front of the window above me. I looked up from the confetti of photo’s and contact sheets that were spread across the floor around me, and took the can of soda that he held out towards me.
“That was all they had left” his tone was neutral - the same kind of tone I was quickly realising I was going to have to get used to. Reluctantly deciding to make eye contact, I was more than a little thankful that his face was nothing more than a silhouette, against the glaring sunlight from outside, preventing me from reading the emotions that spread across his features.
Platonic would only be a harsh reminder of what he’d told me the other night. Sympathetic, over something as insignificant as this, a less than subtle reminder of the mistake I kept trying to convince myself I wasn’t allowing him to make. Anything else - I honestly didn’t want to think about it.
I offered him a smile - unsure of whether I wanted it to read lover, former lover or co-worker. I settled on somewhere in-between and placed the can of Cherry Coke besides me.
It was a few seconds after I’d returned my attention back to the prints that he finally walked away.
