Disclaimer: Oh yeah I totally own TJ Thyne’s eyes! They’re in a jar in my bedroom along with the Doctor’s hand that I stole from Captain Jack Harkness.
Spoilers: Minor spoilers for ‘The Pain in the Heart’
Authors Notes: So I was really hoping that I’d be able to write the other idea I’ve got for a post 3.15 fic today but I ended up writing this instead. It’s inspired by and was, yet again, originally intended for the tv_100 challenge, for the prompt ‘Blue’ but my muse doesn’t want to write what I want it to write just lately, nor can it write anything shorter than 300 words, apparently.
Summary: A little insight into Jack from Angela’s perspective. It’s all in the eyes.

Eyes are the Windows...

She’d always believed that eyes were the windows to a person’s soul, revealing secrets and characteristics they weren’t even aware they were trying to hide most of the time. It was the one thing she’d always focused on in her artwork, in every facial reconstruction she drew. It was the reason blind dates had failed and prospered at lingering looks and why friendships had been forged by a simple glance across a crowded gallery floor.

His were no exception.

From the moment, she met him she knew she’d always be able to figure out how he was truly feeling. The constantly changing shades of blue easier to read than the mood rings that she’d been so fascinated with back in high school.

That day they’d been an unbelievable royal blue. Respectful and yet shining with an unwavering curiosity, observing her as though she were a rare flower beneath his microscope.

The first time she saw him cry she remembered thinking of them as being a pure sea blue. His unshed tears reflecting them as though they were the very ocean itself, and she’d been sure she was going too drowned if she stared for too long.

The day he met her at the hospital they’d been a transparent egg blue, the colour having drained from them almost as quickly as it had from his cheeks the moment the explosion went off. Lingering with an unmistakable sadness, the same kind she could feel gripping at the pit of her stomach. Sadness that their friend had been hurt. Sadness that there was nothing they could do to help.

Glancing between the two of them, watching as Jack distributed the pain medication, whispering words of encouragement to his best friend, she realised there was something else. A shade, she’d only seen once before, back at the Jeffersonian when they’d stopped until the early hours of the morning, looking through photographs and telling stories of a time before broken promises and betrayals. A time when he was mourning the loss of a friend, he believed he should have paid more attention to.

And just like that, she knew.

The End
