“Really, Tosh, it’s alright,” he says, and then it’s said.

A lie? Maybe. He can’t tell.

But weeks after his death, he’s coming to an end and he can’t see a way out. No magic gloves, no last-minute rescues, no Torchwood-style miracle. Not this time.

She whispers his name from kilometres away, and he can still hear the heartbreak in her voice. She’ll be fine, he assures himself. She doesn’t deserve this, but she’ll survive.

There isn’t enough time in the world to tell her how sorry he is. With his track record, she might not believe him, anyway.

But it’s alright, he reminds himself, taking a deep breath out of habit rather than necessity.

For the first time since his death, maybe since before Torchwood, he feels calm.

Even though he knows the darkness is coming, all he can see is the dazzling light.
