2nd Floor Common Room, Sunday Morning

Jan 14, 2007 09:13

Tannim settled in on the couch with a bowl of Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs and the remote. As he flipped through the channels, he grumbled about the lack of Sunday morning cartoons.

It was morning, and Nova happened to be on the second floor. He wandered into the common room to find interesting things to do.

Turtle smiled softly and gave the strange hooded kid a friendly, but tentative, wave.

Nova remembered this girl, and how he had offended her with his staring. He tried to recall her name when his plushy came to mind.

"Turtle..." he said. He returned a small wave of his own.

She nodded, with a small smile. "That's right, I'm Turtle. Your name's Nova, right? We have writing and science together; that helped me remember, I think."

Nova nodded, trying not to think about his first writing assignment.

Hmm, not one for conversation, was he? Turtle rubbed her nose a little as she thought of what to say. "What did you write about? Mine was about tea, and explosions."

Hearing that question surprised him. He wasn't sure how to answer that. He recalled Yuki's reaction and the phrase 'dictionary vomit' and his face sunk behind the shadows of his hood.

"I wrote...what I liked," he said. He hoped that Yuki would make it clearer what he wanted in a paper next time.

"That's good," Turtle nodded with a small smile. "Wouldn't be much point if you wrote what you hated, right?"

Nova supposed that she had a point, unless writing what you hated was the assignment.

He agreed with a nod.

Hmmm. Seemed to have reached another dead end. She rolled a little on her toes as she tried to think of something else. "Um, well, how about our science teacher? She's a little different, isn't she?"

Nova considered the cheery science teacher and companion lizard. He didn't recall anything particularly odd about her other than her fondness of science.

"I guess," he replied not committing to any opinion.

Okay, this was just getting frustrating. He wasn't 'slow' like Chris Theodoraskis was. Nova was just being difficult.

"Why don't you talk much?" Turtle asked, annoyance tinging the edge of her voice. "I'm trying to be all friendly and nice and you're just being mean and unresponsive."

Nova's eyes widened. He didn't think of himself as mean or unresponsive being oblivious to how normal people interact.

He was a little frightened and confused about what to do next. He decided an apology would be best.

"I'm sorry," he said, adding,"What should....we talk about?" He hoped this would make things right.

"Well, I've been trying," Turtle waved her hand a bit, "to talk about school, but all you respond with is 'I guess' and nods. Not much of a conversation if I'm just talking to a hood, y'know?"

Nova gave her a nod then rethought that action and said, "I'll try harder." He was sure he could be more than a hood.

"Hmmm, well," Turtle looked at him thoughtfully before saying, "maybe I'm not picking good topics. Let's try somethng that someone can say a lot about. Like where you're from. Why you're here."
