"I lost count," said Nadia, entirely honestly. When one doesn't notice when one has run out of bullets, one tends not to notice how many things you've killed.

"I have trouble counting sometimes, too," Joxer said. "But that's what we go to school for, right?"

Nadia just kind of glared at Joxer. "I don't have trouble counting."

"But you said you lost count," Joxer said. "You can't say something then say you didn't say it."

"I'm not saying that I didn't--" Nadia cut herself off with a frustrated groan. "Just forget it."

"It's okay," Joxer said. "Want in on a little secret?"

Nadia wasn't actually sure she wanted to know what Joxer considered to be a little secret. "Sure."

"Sometimes, I don't read so good," he said. "So your secret about your little problem with numbers is safe with me."

"I don't have a problem with numbers!"

"Exactly," Joxer said with a nod. "Of course you don't."

Nadia growled slightly, then without thinking about it, jumped forward to grab Joxer and throw him to the floor.

"I. CAN. COUNT. JUST. FINE!" She probably punctuated those words. Possibly even forcefully.

Joxer was more than a little dazed by the attack.

"I won't tell anyone, I swear!"

Well, what did you know. Nadia could beat Joxer with one hand tied . . . well, not behind her back, technically, but still.

She dragged him upright by his collar and snarled at him. "There's nothing to tell, cutre!" Then she leaned back in preparation of smacking him to the floor again.

Walter had watched, briefly bemused and amused before deciding that Nadia was probably going to be mortified enough with how far this had gone. He got off the couch to pull her off of Joxer.

Amazingly enough, he didn't even think Joxer had deserved it this time, but he'd had enough on account that Walter didn't feel too bad for him.

"Nadia!"

Nadia let out a quiet, hoarse scream and lashed out with her good arm towards Walter's temple. She'd completely lost track of where she was.

Don't let them grab you, don't let it happen again. . . .
