Outside the Danger Room, 7th period

Holding a large stick with a piece of poster board attached wasn't the easiest thing to do with one hand. Which meant that Blair's big protest sign today spent a lot of time leaning on the walk next to him when his arm got too achy.

He felt bad though and intermittently would call out the sign's message loudly. "Give Peace a Chance!"

Nadia wandered by on her way . . . well, somewhere. She looked from Blair to the sign to the door to the dangershop, and immediately came to the conclusion that the robots were attacking again.

Thus, she sat down next to Blair.

"Yeah! Peace!"

"Right on, man." Blair bounced. "Did you come to help protest?"

"Sure." Nadia paused. "What are we protesting. River? Evil robots?"

"No, we're not protesting River." Blair said with a frown. "We're protesting hunting class."

"Ah." Nadia blinked. "Wait, why are we protesting a class?"

"Because we don't want the students to be taught how to hunt and kill other people." Blaid nodded.

"We do if it's kill or be killed,"

"Not all situations are like that. That really shouldn't be the first response. I'm just saying give..." Blair shrugged and pointed at the sign. "Well, I guess you know what I'm saying.

"But if you are in a situation where you have to kill, or injure, the other person to keep from getting killed or injured yourself, you have to know how to react and with what tools or weapons. If you don't, you could end up seriously hurt, or worse. And then you don't have much of a chance to give anything a chance."

Blair winced a little at the seriously hurt remark and shook his head. "Then it should be a self defense that they're teaching, not a class on hunting."

"Ever hear that the best defense is a good offense?"

"Just because it's a catchy saying doesn't mean that it's true."

"Not all the time, but it can be. People don't just make up catchy sayings for no reason." Nadia raised an eyebrow at his sign. "They're to get people's attention and let them know important information that they'll remember."

lovechildblair September 13 2006, 17:09:11 UTC
"That's true, although sometimes they make up catchy sayings so you'll remember the saying instead of thinking about the answer on your own."

"But if it rhymes, it must be true." Nadia grinned. "But you're right. Cliches do that, sometimes. People see or hear the phrase, and they've seen or heard it so many times before, it doesn't mean anything to them any more." Nadia had actually studied this while doing language lessons in her training. Knowing the local cliches was just as important as any other part of the culture. "When people see something like 'give peace a chance', they get a mental image of stoned hippies, and don't necessarily think about why they should try talking, first."

"Yeah, I have had that problem." Blair shook his head. "Which is why I always follow up protests with talking."
