4th Floor Common Room -- late morning

Sep 10, 2006 13:58

Dean was up not early but at least it was still morning by the clock. Barely. For whole minutes yet. So he felt totally justified in making breakfasty type foods like bacon and eggs and hotcakes and calling it brunch ( Read more... )

Evie followed her nose downstairs, and brightened when she saw Dean making food. "Good morning. That looks delicious. How are you, Dean?"

"I'm good," Dean replied around a mouthful of food. He swallowed and tried again. "How are you? And help yourself if you're hungry."

"Rather well, all things considered." She giggled at his talking with food in his mouth, then helped herself to juice and hotcakes. "And thank you! One of the nicer things about this place, people cooking so often. Though this kind of breakfast fare is the extent of my talents, so I shan't be returning the favor soon." She took a sip of her juice, and reached for the bacon. "I talked to Dean Forrester, and he said your father's class went well?"

Dean grinned. "Yeah, it seemed to from everything I heard. Well, aside from Blair standing outside with the 'Hunting=Murder' sign."

"Oh, dear." Evie bit her lip, and looked worried. "Blair has very strong convictions, you know. He wants to save the environment and, and, people, and-- was your father *very* angry about it?"

"I haven't talked to Dad since then, but Blair's still breathing so it didn't get quite as bad as I feared. Though apparently Blair called my Dad a murderer and then started talking about my Mom so... yeah." Dean grimaced. "I'm thinking it's probably a good thing that Blair runs fast."

"Oh, dear," Evie said, distressed. "Blair's been so very helpful to me, he can't have thought that through, or meant to be hurtful, and-- your mother?"

"She died when I was four," Dean explained. "It's what Dad started hunting in the first place -- she was killed by a demon. I'm not sure exactly what was said, but Blair's the one who told me that she got brought up so..." He shrugged. "And yeah, Blair's a good kid. I like him; he's just really really sheltered. Doesn't have a clue how some things really work."

"How terrible. I'm so sorry, Dean." Evie felt badly for having even asked. "And, and, perhaps his experience is just-- different. He doesn't seem sheltered to *me*." She paused. "Well, never mind that. But I hope that Blair doesn't get into any future trouble, in spite of ... over-enthusiasm."

"Yeah me too. I tried to talk him out of doing it again, but I don't know if he's going to listen to me." He gave a brief smile. "Son of the enemy and all." Dean grinned suddenly at her. "And I dunno. You don't strike me as the sheltered type. I mean, sure, there's a lot here you don't know about but that's just because of the time difference. And you seem to be doing real well in spite of it."

"Do you really think so?" Evie asked hopefully. "I'm trying not to let my unease show. A great deal is still new to me, although I very much like the technology, and the films and television dramas. And really, I *wasn't* sheltered in Cairo. You can't live in Cairo and be considered sheltered. It's a huge city, it has prejudice and crime and beggars, but it's -- well. It's not the sort of thing that prepares you for *here*."

Dean chuckled. "I don't think there's any place that can completely prepare you for here. And from what I've seen, you're doing fine. I mean two weeks ago you were ready to call the men in little white coats to drag me away in a strait jacket because I believed in television. Now, I just told you that my Mom had been killed by a demon and you didn't even blink. I'd say you're doing great adjusting."

Evie blushed, hard. "Oh. Thank you." She stared happily down at her hotcakes, then looked up at him shyly. "How are the rest of your classes going?"

"Pretty good. Prophecy looks like it's going to be heavy on the reading, but it's all in a good cause so..." He took a bite of egg and then looked at her. "How about you? How are you liking your classes?"

"They're *splendid*. My myths class and history class are *wonderfully* informative, and the teachers are very nice," she turned a little pink around the edges, there, "And Mrs. Gilmore is very kind and helpful in 21st Century. Plus, Jaye's been nice enough to give me pointers outside of class. I'm buying her a mocha for being such a sport, tomorrow."

"Jaye's cool. She's got a very...ah... unique way of looking at things," Dean said with a faint smile. He wondered if he should mention that she also currently hated his guts, but figured that would lead to all sorts of questions that Evie probably didn't want to know the answers to.
