"I'm going back out to look for her again after I've cooled down a little," Lana said. "Is there anything I can do to help with the thing tonight? You know I'd do anything to help her."
Lana looked at him searchingly. "You have a plan and you think it's dangerous," she said. "Just remember, if something terrible happens to you and Phoebe comes back to a life without you... Well do you remember the incident with the balcony? I don't ever want to go through that again."
"Cold and heartless?" Lana asked. "Where are you getting that from? She was fine with me. In fact she looked really happy for the first time in a long time."
Lana looked a little pensive. "I almost would wish she could stay like that if it would make her happy. She's been so upset over this... whatever it is that you're hiding from her."
She glanced up at him challengingly. "Why couldn't you just be open with her?"
Lana was glad she'd managed to stop herself from adding 'this is all your fault!' to the end of her last statement, but she had the feeling he'd heard it anyway.
"I'm sorry," she said, ducking her head and flushing, "I know how much you love her and I know this must be killing you. I'm really sorry."
Lana shook her head, but found it hard to argue with that, even though Phoebe had to bear some responsibility with that personal gain thing. "Even if that were true... Bel, you can't go off and compound things by going off and doing something you haven't thought through to try and fix this"
