Bel finally gave up the research and emerged from his room. He wandered down to the fourth floor common room. "Hey," he said to the room's occupants.

"Bel!" Lana jumped up from the couch. "Have you seen her? I went looking for her, but I couldn't find her anywhere near the Cove."

"Not since last night," Bel said grimly. "She took off when I told her I wanted to take her home."

"Oh," Lana sat back down again. "I was supposed to see her after my workshop today, but I couldn't find her anywhere and it just got too hot."

"I got a lead on changing her back, though," Bel said. "I'm going to check it out tonight I think."

"I'm going back out to look for her again after I've cooled down a little," Lana said. "Is there anything I can do to help with the thing tonight? You know I'd do anything to help her."

"I know," Bel said. "I'll let you know. I gotta track down this person first, and that may take awhile."

"All right," Lana said. "But if I find out you went and did something stupid... well, getting Phoebe turned back won't be your only problem!"

She knew she probably looked and sounded silly all but threatening Bel, but, she was serious.

"I'm willing to do whatever it takes to get her back," Bel said seriously.

Lana looked at him searchingly. "You have a plan and you think it's dangerous," she said. "Just remember, if something terrible happens to you and Phoebe comes back to a life without you... Well do you remember the incident with the balcony? I don't ever want to go through that again."

"Is it better for her to be cold and heartless for the rest of her life?" Bel asked.

"Cold and heartless?" Lana asked. "Where are you getting that from? She was fine with me. In fact she looked really happy for the first time in a long time."

Lana looked a little pensive. "I almost would wish she could stay like that if it would make her happy. She's been so upset over this... whatever it is that you're hiding from her."

She glanced up at him challengingly. "Why couldn't you just be open with her?"

Bel looked guilty and didn't answer.

Lana was glad she'd managed to stop herself from adding 'this is all your fault!' to the end of her last statement, but she had the feeling he'd heard it anyway.

"I'm sorry," she said, ducking her head and flushing, "I know how much you love her and I know this must be killing you. I'm really sorry."

"This is all my fault," Bel said as if he read her thoughts.

Lana shook her head, but found it hard to argue with that, even though Phoebe had to bear some responsibility with that personal gain thing. "Even if that were true... Bel, you can't go off and compound things by going off and doing something you haven't thought through to try and fix this"
